Fascinating. I'd never heard of him before so thank you for the introduction. I like how they included a vocal critic in the 60 Minutes piece, who looked like he was sweating bullets (probably under those old hot lights, but it added to the narrative). I'm going through the archives on his website and there is so much creativity in his work.
Here's an interesting detail. Not only did Joe control EVERY SINGLE DETAIL (thank goodness) of all of his spots...he also owned them all completely. I was at McCann-Erickson in 1984 and we tried to get him for our clients (Coca-Cola, Disneyland, Hilton Hotels and others), but they all said absolutely not...we love him, but he ain't gonna own our commercials. That's whey he can show his stuff anytime he wants (and another reason why he used unknowns in his spots...didn't have to deal with SAG, although he did use AFTRA voice-overs.) He's a genius.
"Where's the beef" is one of the first commercials I remember, and I also remember my parents quoting it, which was remarkable because normally they hated commercials and unceremoniously muted them. Another one they loved to quote was the chicken "pieces parts."
