JM's 2010 reel

Nice, your work has come a long way since the last reel you posted. Your animation skills have gotten a lot better, as is your eye for design. There are still some things here and there that you could edit out, but overall, pretty solid.

A few random thoughts…I would put the flying high to welcome to paradise piece a lot earlier, it's one of your stronger ones and it's too far back in the reel. The first shot of the gridded cube of metal balls, the modynamics thing, I would drop that, a little too tutorial-ish. The other part where the balls wrap up the helix is cool. There are a few places in there that reminded me a lot of Signalnoise pieces, but I'm not sure if that was intentional or accidental. The skateboard piece was pretty dope, I liked that. You could probably do without a lot of those little bumper pieces in there, some of which definitely look dated in skill compared to your newer work.

One suggestion that might give your bboy piece a little more impact. When those infographics pop up as he's putting his hat on, I would roto out his arm and put that part of the graphics behind the arm, make them feel like a part of the scene. Right now they kinda feel slapped on top, even with tracking them in there.

I would drop the “right now” piece with the strings in the background and the type piece with the blue word in the middle of the white words. They don't quite have the polish of your other pieces and are bringing down your reel.

Last thing, and this is all nitpicky, but the gray lines in the district fresh piece really stick out, especially in the edit you have. I would lose the lines altogether if you can. They don't really fit.

I would still be studying up more on design fundamentals. You have the technical chops, but your design could still use some work. Especially your type. Type is communication and that's what the motion graphics do, so not being strong in type is doing yourself a real disservice.

Very nice. I really like you're reel. I started playing with AE back in September. Blown away by what it can do. I have a long way to go though. Great job again! Don't really feel that I can critique though.

Hey thanks for the comments,
did a small update on my reel after some critiques.

oneinfiniteloop, thanks for the feedback, seriously, took from most of the advice you offered and i hope this second time it is a little more solid all around.
I left the text treatment in there, but I plan on taking that out soon. some of my other work i felt was weaker.
