JJ Abrams confirmed to direct Star Wars VII

As usual, I suspect this film will sink or swim (for me at least) on story/script. I'd normally include acting performances in that equation as well, but these sci-fi fantasies can survive reasonably well with great VFX even if the acting is only so-so (as Lucas's films, to varying degrees, tend to prove).

Director-wise I think the best possible choice would probably have been James Cameron, but that was not going to happen...

If Abrams has a great script and doesn't muck it up in the shoot/edit, it could be great fun. I'll stay optimistic for now...

Curious if they'll use John Williams again. He's getting up there in years...If not, it will most probably be JJ's preferred composer Michael Giachinno.

I agree. I liked the direction and acting in Star Trek. The problem for me was the time travel. Time Travel is often similar to a Deus Ex Machina. Hey, it didn't happen, or it doesnt' matter it happened, we'll fix it with time travel! It's like pulling a machine gun out of your butt to save the day. Examples of good Time Travel stories are like The Time Traveler when you go to the future but don't use it to fix the past, or you go into the past but it doesn't affect the future like Sam Raimi's Evil Dead. It's just a fish out of water story using Time Travel for the setting.

I agree that you can't recapture the feel of the first Star Wars trilogy because that time in history is past, but you can go in either direction, towards a more adult geared script like the first trilogy or something made for Tweens like the second trilogy. Not being a Tween myself I'm hoping for a more adult geared script, please no little kids that can make robots and pilot space ships, no Jar Jar Binks, etc.

Whimsy was always a part of Lucas's SW formula, whether it was R2 and 3PO, Ewoks, Jar Jar, or even the first Yoda scene in ESB, so I'd expect some of it to be there in the post-Lucas film(s). Done right, it provides some quite welcome cute/comic relief IMO...

The force has a strong influence on the weak minded.

Do we need more Star Wars ? Jedi's ? CGI Hell ?

Numb about this. Could be really good or could be like the last three films.
