JJ Abrams confirmed to direct Star Wars VII

Yeah! Lens flares on light sabers! Although I wouldn't exactly say this rumor is "confirmed".

A new report says that the director for Star Wars: Episode VII has been found and it’s none other than J.J. Abrams. The Wrap is reporting the huge news, saying that Abrams has agreed to direct the highly-anticipated film (to say the least) after months of being courted by new Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy. Just last month, Abrams specifically said he was not going to do the film (indicating he had been asked), but as The Wrap puts it, “The lure of the Jedi was too strong.”

The Wrap goes on to say that Ben Affleck was also in contention for the Episode VII directing gig and speculate how Abrams taking the job might complicate Abrams’ relationship with Paramount, where he’s been directing the Star Trek series, with the second film in the new series, Star Trek Into Darkness, opening this summer. In addition, Abrams has been a producer on the Mission: Impossible series at Paramount, since directing the third film.

EDIT: In other news, Abrams is rumored to be behind an effort to re-re-image Doctor Who for a new trilogy of movies involving the origins of the Daleks. (Spoiler: It was the Cylons who did it!)

EDIT 2: Now this I trust a bit more:

Star Trek director J.J. Abrams will be helming the next Star Wars movie. “It’s done deal with J.J.,” a source with knowledge of the situation told Deadline today. Argo director Ben Affleck was also up for the gig, the source says. Abrams was courted heavily by producer Kathleen Kennedy to take the Star Wars job. Expected in 2015, Episode VII will be the first new Star Wars movie since 2005′s Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith. Michael Arndt is writing the script for the first installment of the relaunch of George Lucas’ franchise by Disney.

I have mixed feelings about JJ Abrams. A kid in a candy store eats too much candy. I'd prefer someone who respects the franchise but isn't a fan. And I'm sick to death of reboots no matter how good they are. But hey, we got three good movies, a goddamn miracle when we look at Lucas today. Now Disney has control we may even get a bluray release of the pure unmolested films one day. Anything else can stay bad fan fiction targeted at my nephew. If it works out, fine. But I don't need it.

These aren't reboots they are sequels. If they redid episodes 4-6 that would be a reboot. I'm open to something new in the Star Wars universe, anything to wash the taste of the prequels out of my mouth.

I'm still going to assume that it will be straight out crap, but with JJ Abrams on board at least there's a chance it will be worth the ticket price.

I'm excited as well. It's all over the news now.

He feels right for Star Wars. He's got the right dose of humor, drama, and approach to his works. Everyone's always said he's a fan favorite for Star Wars, but no one really thought he was on the table. I think he even told people he wasn't doing it a while back.

Well George did JJ a big favor by making three piles of crap. The bar he has to clear is incredibly low. If the acting is even half decent, and the script at all competent, it will probably be the highest grossing film of all time considering how much the prequels made.

If it's JJ Abrams it will be a rebooted sequel. The universe will be rebooted, revamped, call it what you will. Probably not a bad thing, the lost feel of the originals us older folk lament could never be recaptured anyway because it was a place and time. Even bringing the same people together couldn't recapture it so no point trying. Whether it will be official fan fiction or a true continuation I have no idea. I'm with you, something new in the universe would be better. Even if the prequels had been good they would have ruined the originals by saying what was best left unsaid.

Wars in the stars yeah baby. Bring back ackbar, there's going to be a trap!

A reboot is when they start over as though the other films never happened, like Nolan's Batman, or the latest Spider-Man...This isn't even a revamp. It is Episode 7, which will happen sometime after Return of the Jedi. It's a direct sequel.

Obviously none of us know what the new film will be... reboot or sequel. I'm guessing most of us hope for a sequel.

If we assume for a minute that it will be a sequel sometime after Episode VI, who would like to see some of the original Ep IV - VI cast? In supporting roles I'm thinking. Not as the main cast.

It's been confirmed it's a sequel. He is directing Episode 7, and Michael Arndt is scripting Episode 7--
