Is it legit broken over 2 seasons or will there be an asterik if he makes the mark ?

Do you think he will even break the mark as pressure mounts.

I say he won't break it and if he does it must carry an asterik and not be the official DiMagggio Record Breaker.

Elias Sports Bureau said that they will * it as being split over two seasons thus separating a hit streak versus a single season hitting streak.

I think it is legit though, and impressive. Most importantly, it's nice to see something positive in baseball right now because my Yankees are playing like a$$. I mean seriously, what the hell happened the last two nights?

Screw it all, baseball sucks (my mood should change if we get above .500 again).

I feel it has to be a separate record, spanning two years. For better or worse, I'd have to say that there are different forces working against a hitter over two seasons, than just one. I don't believe it will get that far, but if it does, it is in a different catagory than Joe D's doing it in a single season. This was discussed in depth on ESPN this morning (probably a rerun from last night.).

On Tuesday I heard an interview with some guy (can't remember his name) from Elias Sports Bureau on MLB Homeplate (XM175). The Elias Sports Bureau is the record keeping organization for MLB. They were very specific that if it gets that far it is a seperate record, but if he breaks the record this season (seeing as it is at game 3 now) then it would break the old record. If he breaks it with last season and this season then it is just consecutive game hitting streak versus single season consecutive game hitting streak.

In college I went three games in a row with a hit. I thought I was impressive.

I'd actually be more impressed if he were to break the record over two seasons. He had all winter to cool off and he's still hot as hell.

Apparently Joe had a 61 Game hitting streak when he played for the Seals back in 1933
I don't recall the pitcher's name off hand, but some schmuck tried to pitch out to him and walk him (thus ending his streak.) Joe D would have none of it...
He stood on the poo pooing plate, and still managed to get a hit, and the streak continued.

From what I've heard, people would pass each other in the street (and not just in NY)...and ask total strangers, "Did he get a hit today?" No further explanation was needed...it was on everyone's mind.

For me he remains the best player to ever play the game.

Edit:
John, I am referring to the 56 game hitting streak in '41

Being the baseball fan that I am, I get into these conversations all the time with people. I think it is almost impossible to literally pick the best baseball player of all time because baseball evolves (yes, it does!!!).

If you look at Ruth's era we weren't into conditioning and training. If you look at Joe D's era, it was the birth of offense and cross country travel for games. If you look at Mantle's era, we finally had medicine availble to cure players from sports injuries. Post Mantle, we move into the dead ball dominant pitching era. From this point we move into the offensive era, smaller parks, and massive offensive numbers.

Everything changes, and therefore it is impossible to say who is the best player. How would Joe D react to the speed, power, and politics of today's game? How would Arod react to the massive ballparks of yesterday? Hell, how would Arod react with 20+ double headers a year?

Best player arguments or discussions don't do anything for me. What does do something for me? Best player by decade! That's a fun one, to go position by position and pick who's #1.
