by extra he means $45,000 for the sensor wrapped in a magnesium body and some software -- because that's all you're getting. So maybe $100K later you can have a functioning camera. For the HD TV guys (some 100+ reds right there) they will snap these up.... maybe.. there is concern over production issues.

Handmade has a lot of red flags, are there issues with their suppliers? Jannard said: "We have discussed EPIC with the largest and most significant players in the electronics industry... they all think we are nuts. We have had to help fabricators solve problems because they have never seen this type of complexity before, especially in the size of the package. We heard "don't do that" 100's of times in the past two years... from very smart guys."

Maybe the "very smart guys" had some valid points... considering they are making the camera parts for him.

"I don't have any issue with Michael's concerns or his point of view... I asked for it. The only thing I take exception to is the part about us being "unfair" and the inference of trying to "slip one over" on our customers. We are too open for our own good most of the time... this one just got under my skin. I'm sure that was not the intention of the original post.

In the lack of information, it is easy to whip up hysteria. I guess it is my job not to let that happen. PLEASE READ NEXT.

We have been pretty good at meeting product expectations but terrible at meeting deadlines and dates. The only reason I can point to is the EXTREME complexity of this project. We have discussed EPIC with the largest and most significant players in the electronics industry... they all think we are nuts. We have had to help fabricators solve problems because they have never seen this type of complexity before, especially in the size of the package. We heard "don't do that" 100's of times in the past two years... from very smart guys. But we have finished the project with even more capability than originally promised. You business types will appreciate this. We are late which means that development took a lot longer than expected. That means we spent a lot more money on development than expected... after we priced the camera. No biggie on my end. But please keep this in mind when even thinking about complaining about price for anything we sell. You can complain about us being late, bugs or that you don't like our marketing approach... just not price.

After reviewing this thread I am more convinced than ever we should build these machined, hand built bodies. I'll announce a price (probably around $45K just for the brain) and see if anyone wants them. I will probably build some anyway because it is in our customers best interests. We will learn a lot from the process. If no one wants them, I'll keep them for myself...

No hards feelings about the thread, the comments and the banter. It is all for the best.

Jim"

I'll believe it when I see it, and by see it I mean someone who bought one of the Epics says they got it (not the hand-built ones) and successfully shoots with it and posts the footage somewhere (would likely be on RedUser.net).

(comments below are general not targeted towards anyone in particular)

I'm glad Jim posted that (the post 2 above mine)...because seriously, everyone needs to shut up. Go and develop your own groundbreaking camera with your dollars, industry/client pressure, business risk, countless bad press and filmmaker wannabe naysayers, then speak.

Anyone who is enjoying even an old DVX100 are spoiled rotten brats. You're shooting 24 pictures a SECOND onto a compact data item (called a tape), and importing it through a tiny wire onto a machine that displays graphics and colors and processes faster than your brain...yet you whine that RED can't get their 6k camera through the doors fast enough?

I came here to post almost this, except with more colorful words.

Building a camera from scratch in 3 years is unbelievable... well lets say they used some tech from the R1... ok 6 years, to make a camera the size of a DSLR (give or take) that shoots 5k, RAW images, up to 120fps in full 5k, with the new HDRx mode, that I don't even think I need. All for $28k... well $45k for the hand made ones.

Why are you all complaining? go shoot with your AF100's, or your Sony F3's. When you become a professional, and don't want to show off "Hey look at me, I'm a professional Hollywood DP shooting $500mil features... on a HDSLR" you'll end up shooting on RED, one way or another Digital will take over film. And red is sitting right there at the starting line, giving you the resolution of film, that you don't have to put through a 2k film scanner to edit.

... been reading the thread about the machined hand made models, methinks these are going to sell like hot cakes, 45k is a steal, hell I would if I had the money and a low serial #

for rentals companies and people with money to spend on something worthwhile, I agree

If they're going to make these by hand, can we get custom orders? I want mine to be plated in platinum and bejeweled.

So I realize you havent officially stated a price, but doing a rough guestimate here on a setup of EpicM would be about this?

EpicM Brain: $45,000
EpicM SSD Module: $3,000
EpicM Side Handle: $1,900
Titanium Mount: $3,000
4x 64gb: $2,000

= $54,900?

u got that kinda money?

edit:
Shawn's guess was pretty close, price now confirmed 4 package deal link

vagarob, my point wasn't to insult...the entire point of that post was to show how truly spoiled we are to have what we have. Old DVX100 owners aren't REALLY brats, LOL. As shown in many other threads, most posts about new products now are negative and "I want this or that" instead of how it was when the older cameras were coming out and everyone was thankful and excited to see technology move forward.

Try and take what I said in context please, it wasn't to be taken 100% seriously.

No one was whining. I don't subscribe to the theory that just because people want more means they're somehow spoiled. That's part of capitalism, and if people don't like it... they should subscribe to communism and be happy with their one camera choice.

People shouldn't be rude about it either -- bashing a product just because. LOTS of people @Red @Sony @Panasonic etc have given unpaid overtime to make things work for us. On the other hand, its a product and we're a consumer... they aren't doing this for charity.

With Red...I personally find it distasteful at the reaction from both the Company and vocal minority of "fans" in relation to other companies & cameras.

That is, Nothing can ever be as good as Red. It's that sort of business thinking you can find littered throughout the many bankrupt companies over the years.

Would you settle for gold and lizard skin?
