Jib Tip

Here's a good tip for everyone considering using a jib:

Tie it down if it's in the bed of a pickup truck.

I pulled a stupid last night and lost my Camcrane going around a corner. It got hit by a couple cars, but nobody got hurt, and in all actuality, only one piece broke off, and it'll be weldable. But yes, it could have been a very costly mistake, so I thought I'd pass some common sense wisdom on to you guys.

Aren't you the guy that I told in another post to make to tie it down?

oh well, some people have to learn the hard way. Good news is I'll bet you never let it happen again.

Christ man! That could really have hurt someone!

People have to understand, filmaking is a harzardous profession, that is why grips, electricians and stunt coordinators exist (and get good paychecks)! I have nothing aggainst indie filmaking, but BE CAREFUL! And ASK SOMEONE THAT KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING before attempting bolder moves... People die making films all the time! You don't hear the same from restaurant chefs or office workers, filmaking is DANGEROUS!

I take it you learned this lesson, and god bless for nobody being injured in the proceess

It is perfectly understandable why we risk so much, why we work so many straught hours, why we sometimes cross the line. We get so involved with our films, it is a natural consequence, that is why we need to keep telling ourselves "ok maybe this is too much" all the time. That's also why we like it so much!

I hope you haven't lost a lot of money from the incident, and that your camera is okay... But honestly, it's freaking obvious you have to tie it down, man! :)

Don't worry, in the heat of battle we can miss even the obvious... So thanks for sharing this experience, maybe you will manage to prevent something more serious from happening to another DVXUser...

Good Luck with the repairs and reshooting (if there will be any...)

I should have clarified a little. We weren't shooting at the time. It wasn't set up, it was just laying down in the back for transport. Yeah, obviously, if I had it set up, I'd tie it down. And no, Icarus, I've never met you before, so it wasn't me. Sorry. :-) The message was supposed to be fairly tongue-in-cheek / "duhhhh".
