JERKS!!!!

Re: JERKS!!!!

Hardware compression. As opposed to our software[u/] compression. Dedicated compression hardware is quite expensive, which is why you won't hear much discussion about it.

Re: JERKS!!!!

Also, the first portion and majority of the clip contains static content. Only the actor is moving but everything else around him doesn't. Good compression can then store all that static info once and not have to store it for any of the remaining frames. That can be a huge savings.

Creators of video content for the web take this into consideration when making clips. It's especially important since a file too large isn't going to be watched and the client isn't going to be happy.

So, if you want better compression, don't move the camera.

Re: JERKS!!!!

1.5 megs for a 30 sec clip that's 320 x 240 with no music or substantial audio, is not that big of a deal...

Hans is referring to what we call a "talking head". For this type of video you can set the key frame to a greater interval like 10+ secs which helps to significantly in reduce the overall file size.

Re: JERKS!!!!

good compression but not particularly surprising. For a clip like that, I don't expect any larger size. On the contrary, it could be smaller. A clip like that probably needs only a couple of keyframes, since it's almist always static. It's a quicktime file. They are probably using the best compression codec there is, which is Sorenson 3. It's way ahead of all other codecs, including Windows Media and popular MPEG4 variations.

 Re: JERKS!!!!

What about the new Flash Video in the Macromedia Video Kit?

Anybody use this? Looks good to me...

JE :)

Re: JERKS!!!!

Flash video uses the H.263 codec (spark) which is an older codec when compared with Sorenson Video 3 Pro. Which mean you will not get the same quality video through Flash (at least not yet...)

Personally I've tried using Flash Video for extreme sports videos and found it to be too choppy. For my application I'm sticking with Windows Media.

Re: JERKS!!!!

Yeah. Windows Media Encoder is the only encoder that's faster than Cleaner at encoding .wmv's.
