Jeep Corner

I'm driving my fourth Jeep, 2001 Grand Cherokee Ltd loaded w/ Quadra drive full time 4w, but 6 cylinder instead of V8. Pushing 200K miles.
My second GC
I had 2 Cherokee Wagoneer Ltd's before that. (faux woody look).
Love that old AMC inline 6 truck engine.

The old inline 6 cylinder engines are tough as nails.

Yes, CJs aren't cheap but I'm getting one. Based on what I've been looking at, I'm expecting to pay $10-12K. Not looking for a 'show' CJ; just one that is rust-free and with some work done to it.

I read a mid 90's review of a Grand Cherokee Ltd where the reviewer called it a mall assault vehicle because they were so popular with suburban moms with kids.:)

That's probably true of most comfort-SUVs; Expeditions, Tahoes, etc. They have come to replace the minivans of the late 1990's - early 2000's.

Mine has the off road package with the skid plates. Not a serious off roader, but certainly capable of negotiating the old logging roads through the national forests in my area. I live in the NW corner of SC near the Great Smokies National Park. Great general purpose all roads all weather vehicle for my area.

That's the way I like 'em.

I'm not looking for an over-the-top lifted, cut-up, beat-down, rust bucket.

I want something like this:

Only mods I've done are minor, Bilstein shocks, K&N air filter, and Pulstar sparkplugs. The last two items gained about 2mpg mileage increase overall plus a little extra oomph.

Miss my last XJ. Totalled in a wreck. Now in a tricked-out 4runner. But I want another Chero.

They have such a raw and simplified beauty. My '96 XJ is a dark blue "Country" edition with 4x4. It has 193K miles on the inline 6 and still runs great.

I *finally* upgraded form the factory AM/FM/Cassette stereo to a Bluetooth/HD Radio/CD stereo after giving a ride to someone who called me out on it. lol

My '99 XJ (usual work vehicle) will roll over 200K on the odo this month, so it's good to finally have it broken in.

As to other Jeeps... this has long been a weakness.

My first car (1992) was a 1976 Cherokee, rust-red (on purpose) with a white roof. It was that cheerful combination of rock-solid stability that still made passengers feel they were about to die at any minute on any given voyage. It died an untimely death when it was t-boned at an intersection.

At the end of college, I got Jeepitis something awful. I didn't mess around and found a decent-shape '76 CJ5 in trade for a STG-58 I'd built. 360, T-18, 4.10 locked gears with tires ranging from 32-34 throughout it's life. After rebuilding the tranny and motor, rebuilt the tranny the right way soon afterwards, changed it into a rock crawler a couple years later, and generally beat the snot out of it. It happily soldiered on, some would say getting stronger all the while.

Old Jeeps seem to attract more old Jeeps, and over the next 6 years I bought, rebuilt, broke, and flipped (both financially and literally) quite a herd... if memory serves:
- '78 CJ7
- '76 J-10 pickup
- '90 Grand Wagoneer (3 at different times)
- '88 Grand Wagoneer
- '86 Grand Wagoneer
- '84 Grand Wagoneer
- '68 C101 Commando
- '68 CJ5
- '54 CJ5
- '88 XJ Cherokee
- '92 MJ Comanche pickup

Also dabbled in Toyota 4x4's for a while, owning a self "Lincoln-locked" '82 pickup (wound up snapping the frame in two on a local boulder pile - threw its motor and running gear into a '68 CJ5, so it's still alive somewhere), a hyper-built '85 4Runner (locked, 4.88's, 35's, dual transfer cases, roll cage, etc. etc.) that I daily drove to work for 3 years, and a '94 Land Cruiser (my wife's current unnecessarily macho kid hauler/grocery getter).

Upon changing careers and going freelance 5 years ago, I sold it all (except our '99 XJ and Land Cruiser) to finance the fledgeling business. In a move of great justice, I traded my long-beloved and much-bedraggled '76 CJ5 for an impeccably built Mauser-action .35 Whelen.

I keep threatening my wife that I'll get back into them once business picks up enough.

Here's a photo I found online with a quick search for my old '76 CJ5... posing with a crappy set of wheel covers I attached as a joke

Another photo I found mucking about on the rocks

I have a 99 cherokee that I love driving and I am contemplating the new body style liberty whenever the cherokee kicks it. My brother used to have a cj7 that he was constantly fixing and replacing parts on. It was a money pit. He also had a cj2 and a Cj3b maybe that he never got on the road.
From what I remember you will get a better price later in the year when it is too cold to drive them, if they don't have a hardtop.
