Jazz Fest

Any other jazz fans out there?

I've gone to the past three Red Sea Jazz festivals in Eilat (Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Chris Potter, Omar Sosa) and was thinking Stefon Harris would be the best bet this year.

Miles epitomizes jazz. He led me to all of the players. So many stories about him. I would love to see a video of when Wynton jumped onstage in Vancouver and Miles just scowled at him. If you haven't read his autobiography, do so. Then read Milestones to compare.

I don't keep up with all the new 'young lions' like I used to. It had been my job while in college, working in the jazz annex of a CD shop. But Stefon Harris looks promising, from what I've read. Seeing Jeff "Tain" Watts would probably be a safer bet but it might be kind of a sleeper. I saw him when Branford came to UD in 1990. I watched him the entire time, practically ignoring Branford, Kenny Kirkland (p) and Robert Hurst (b) because his drumming was so lyrical and so melodic and so complementary to what was going on around him. During intermission, they turned on the lights and my friend was sitting in his seat, asleep!

Who do you listen to, Larry?

Thanks for posting this but i have seen it and the stills they managed to grab. It's possible there is no video of it. That lady is annoying.

It's worth typing an excerpt from Miles' autobiography here in which he relates the incident:

We were playing at this outdoor amphitheater that was jam-packed. Wynton was scheduled to play the next night. So here I was playing and getting off on what I was doing. All of a sudden I feel this presence coming up on me, this body movement, and I see that the crowd is kind of wanting to cheer or gasp or something. Then Wynton whispers in my ear—and I'm still trying to play—"They told me to come up here."

I was so mad at him for doing that [...] like that, I just said, "Man, get the [...] off the stage." He looked a little shocked when I said it to him like that. After that, I said, "Man, what the [...] are you doing up here on stage?" Get the [...] off the stage!" And then I stopped the band. Because we were playing some set pieces and when he came up like that I was trying to give the band some cues. He wouldn't have fit in. Wynton can't play the kind of [...] we were playing.

Yea, great story about Wynton's sad attempt at cool. You couldn't upstage Miles, he was, Wynton wanted to be.
I don't think the video exists though. Too bad.
