what if Mendes did decide to direct the material because he thinks all american are inherintly retarted? why does that make it a bad movie?
 
Well, maybe Mendes is trying to say that Americans are blood thirsty bastards. Anyone who has any knowledge of American history could find plenty of reasons to back that arguement, which I do not want to participate in at this time. I would like to say, as for stereotypeing Americans, look at what kinds of films, for the most part, we send around the world. If anyone is stereotyping Americans, it is Americans. But any way...

When you direct a film that wins Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Cinematagraphy and Best Screenplay, you get the right to make what ever the f*ck you want. That is what Mendes has done (with American Beauty).

Of course, you have the right not to like it. Ain't America cool for that?
 
CG it sounds like you're faulting Mendes for staying true to the material. I don't see that as a fault of Mendes. He obviously decided to approach a war film from a different angle. There's no shortage of entertaining pro American war propoganda films out there.

Sometimes it's good to be challenged by a film and get an alternate picture. And if you go into a film looking for American stereotypes, you'll probably find them.

And it's stereotyping Americans cause this is a movie that is going to be seen worldwide. It is going to push the stereotype that we are all like George Bush, that we all want to take over the world, that we are all gun-weilding pyschopaths with a thirst for blood.

I think this is a fairly simplistic rendering of how the world will interpret this film. People are smarter than you think.

You forget that in almost the entire rest of the world, this is how we're perceived. And I'd like to hear a convincing argument that this movie didn't advance that perception. I'd be very interested to hear from some non-Americans on this issue.

I thought this movie was awight! Didn't do much for me but I did however thought the acting was pretty damn good!
 
This argument is moot since I know none of you will do this. But watch the movie again with the possibility of what I've said in mind. This movie is anti-American. It makes Americans look stupid (weren't their Brits in Operation Iraqi Freedom? Hmm, that's funny. Didn't see any of them in the movie acting stupid). it's disappointing that with the intelligence level on this board people aren't (pardon the irony) "looking deeper".

I mean according to that other poster, that's what Mendes wanted us to do.

cg calm down. I love the movie. and did you even watch it had nothing to do it with that. cine was great good humor and great action. man jamie foxx has grown these last few years. and donnie darko is back. this a great film just dont expect a war, expect a great film.
 
CG you're thinking of a different war lol. this one is desert storm. it really seems to be how bad one wants something to work in his life to make his family happy but he really doesnt have anything and when he gets home he loses it all. all he had was the core and even though he never killed any, it was the only thing that made him happy.
