Jack Cardiff Dies

I did some work on an upcoming DVD release of The African Queen last year and we were desparately trying to get what I am sure would have been the last interview with Mr. Cardiff. He was too far gone already.

If you ever want a great read, his autobiography, "Magic Hour" is a very entertaining and informative read.

Also, I was watching a new release the other night of "A Matter of Life and Death", the 1946 Powell/Pressburger film that Cardiff photographed in Technicolor. David Niven, Kim Hunter, Roger Livesey. The 70s "Heaven Can Wait" was based off of it but it is much better. Very entertaining film and the direction, costumes and production design are amazing as was Cardiff's photography. It was re-titled as "Stairway to Heaven" for the U.S. release because the studio didn't want to have a movie title with the word "Death" in it a mere year after the War. Great film, see his work in it.

RIP Mr. Cardiff

Just the other day I was remarking how surprisingly great the cinematography of Rambo II looked on blu-ray. Changed my opinion of the film up a notch. For some reason I didn't make the connection it was the same Jack Cardiff who shot all those classics. Makes perfect sense now. And to think he was almost 70 when he shot it! Who says action filmmaking is a young man's game! RIP.
