I googled and did the search here and didn't find anything about my issue, so I figured I'd give it a go.
When I go into EXPORT > QUICKTIME MOVIE, then no matter whether I have it set to "current settings" or another codec setting, under the MARKERS option it only gives the option of UP or DOWN. All my timeline markers are set as chapter markers, not compression markers. Normally I get the option under MARKERS to choose various marker settings like: DVD Studio Pro, Chapter Markers, etc. I would go DVD Studio Pro option if I were going to make my DVD in that program. If I were aiming for iDVD for my authoring solution, then Chapter Marker option was the one I'd use. Now I have neither. Only UP or Down options.
So I tried a test export with chapter markers and chose the UP option. No chapter markers appear in my final rendered movie. Both in Quicktime 7 and Quicktime X (or whatever the current version of Quicktime player is).
This is on a Mac Pro running FCP 6 in OS X 10.6.8 which I've had running on these settings/specs for awhile now with no problem. I have no clue how I suddenly have no options besides UP or DOWN for chapter menu exports. I also tried another project file and the same thing happens when I go to export. Only the UP or DOWN option in the MARKERS tab. So it appears it isn't the actual project that is messed up.
UPDATE: I was thinking I needed to reinstall or trash my preferences, but luckily the problem seems to have disappeared after closing FCP and re-opening the software. I did some more searching online and finally found a bit of troubleshooting advice that said things along the lines of what I experienced. Basically close and re-open first, then if that doesn't work take more drastic measures like trashing preferences or reinstallation (here is the thread -- https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2591)
So mods feel free to delete this thread unless it seems like it might be helpful to someone that encounters the same mysterious problem I had. Very weird stuff indeed.
