with usb speakers hooked up to my mac pro for awhile now and wondered what reference/regular speakers should i get for editing without breaking the bank. I have been looking at the m-audio av 40's and wondered if someone could offer something comparable?

what are you guys using?

right now i have no interface. you mean like a black magic or matrox interface? i was thinking i could just use audio out (analog) from the macpro... or even optical out from the macpro. i edit in my bedroom and am just looking for the best speakers that will improve my scenario over the current usb option.

i am open to suggestions derrick so feel free.

thanks

If you don't have a quality audio interface better speakers won't be as effective as they could be.

I would recommend the Blue Sky MediaDesk 2.1 System. Probably the best $700 you will ever spend and can be upgraded to 5.1. They are one of the standards for professional video editing suites, and many audio post houses use them as a "B" set. I have it on my wish list. (I currently use the Mackie HR824 speakers with the HRS120 sub; about $2k. But then, I do audio post for a living.)

The Alesis M1 Active MkII's are okay ($300pr) as are the Yamaha MSP5's $275ea).

You also want to pay attention to your listening environment. Quiet it down and treat it as much as you can. It will make an amazing difference.
