Hope this doesn't sound too basic but....in imovie it was a no-brainer.

How to import itunes tunes into fcp timeline?

Thnx

You have to burn it to a CD, then re-import it into iTunes as an AIFF file.

iTunes purchased music works in iMovie because that is a consumer application, and the implication is that it will be used for personal use only...family videos. So using popular music in those is not an issue. But FCP is a professional application, with the idea that any project edited there is done to make money and to be shown to a wide audience. In that case you need to get the SYNC RIGHTS to the music in question. If you don't, there can be legal consequences. Even wedding videos need the synch rights.

If you are like me and need TEMP music to cut your project to, until a composer comes along and scores the final mix, this workaround is a good way to get music into FCP.

Actually you can convert the file in itunes to an aiff from the advance menu tab Then from FCP just import from your itunes library. Just make sure you import the aiff and not the mp3 file.
FCP does not play well with mp3 files and imovie does and that is the only reason

Not if it was bought off the iTunes store...

Just flat wrong... please don't push poor information out that could potentially get people put in jail or fined.

Thanks for jumping down my throat. He did not ask how to get music from the itunes STORE into FCP but how to get songs out of ITUNES into FCP. All I was doing was telling him how to go about converting your music without having to burn (waste) a CD for one song.
Does FCP like mp3 files?....... I didn't think so.
In no way did I ever say to steal music. All I did was state some facts about the software and it had nothing to do with the use of copyrighted music.

Actually, I wasn't talking about stealing music -- more like cutting to familiar tunes to learn fcp.

Which brings up another question -- when you buy music online from a a company like twistedtracks, how is it downloaded and what format does it come in? Thnx.

What?

Look at what I said

NOT what you said.

Now -- as far as OP goes... if you don't want to keep going back to the CD for the original track you can import them (by changing the preferences of iTunes) directly as aiff 44.1/16bit just as they are on the CD. Should you wish to catalog them in iTunes as compressed audio files just reconvert them back to 48/16 when you want to use in FCP...

BUT BUT BUT

There will be measurable quality loss in doing it this way -- regardless of what you think you might actually be hearing...

I'd do that for a scratch track... then go back to the disk and pull the original file and dither it up from that.

Good luck,
