iTunes on external drive

Do you want to save the application, or the music library to an external drive? This is something I've been thinking about doing myself.

There shouldn't be any problem with running the application from your computer and accessing the music files from an external drive. I currently have my music library on a networked computer and can play iTunes off of it from two other computers.

I just want to save the music so I can clear up some space on the hard drive.

Not sure exactly how to transfer it to an external drive and if transfered, will it will play on different computers or just the iTUnes from where it came.

follow the directory above that I posted and change the folder loctation
close itune and move the files to the new folder.
open ituns

either it will freak out and ask you where the media is
show it

or it might just find them on its own in the new directory
(haven't done this with this version)

songs from your CD colliection will play on other computers
songs you downloaded from itunes will only play on the original computer

you could always try a test, moving just one album in the above fashion (make sure you delete it from its current location after you move it to the new one)
if it doesn't work as I described above just change your folder location back to the original place and then you only have to move one album back.

Find your file with all your songs, (I just right click on a song and then click on "show in finder" highlight all the songs you want moved and drag them to external device (external HD). I'd suggest making a file to drop them into in advance so you don't have a really, really long list of songs showing up in your external HD, mixed with other files. Hope this helps.
