I'm sure the audio pros are familiar with this- I'm posting for those of us who primarily shoot video and work with audio when rough editing. I'm working on a feature and have noticed that additional audio tracks from other than the main mic can cause unwanted reverb. So before blaming the mic or mic distance, try isolating the mic you used. If it's HVX footage, get rid or mute the 2nd channel and channels 3 and 4 (built in mic)(you may also find yourself getting rid of unwanted background noise picked up by those mics). If recording your subjects with two mics at the same time, pull down opposite track when there is no dialogue.
If you are shooting on the AF100, click on "Modify" and "Make stereo pair" so you can control the two tracks individually. Otherwise you may get unwanted audio or reflected sound on the main track.
Using these methods, I've managed to put some previously unusable audio back in the usable category- always a good thing.
