Part 1 of the Durus follow focus overview is up: http://www.cinevate.com/website/index.php/videouniversity/

An iPhone (H264@640x360) friendly encode is now a standard for us, in addition to the Flash web streaming version, so folks on the run can download the clip. Chris had a bit of fun with the editing. Enjoy :)

A few weeks later than we hoped, the first of the units headed out today. Our apologies to those who waited so patiently, but rest assured you got the units at the reduced introductory pricing to help make the wait a bit more tolerable.

Cheers,
Dennis.

Thanks guys...long time coming, I know! We actually have at least two more surprises coming this week so it'll be Christmas early for the reviewing crowd.

Anyone interested in having a look at the Cinevate Follow Focus is encouraged to stop in for the next meeting of the Southern California Brevis User Group (SoCalBUG) this Sunday, November 23rd. Full details about the meeting can be seen here:

http://cinevate.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=2364

Much thanks to Denis for providing a prototype unit in time for the meeting.

Please RSVP if you plan to attend.

Thanks,

How Much?

What once was a quest to bring us reasonably priced cinema products is slooowly creeping it's way back up again. I think this is a great unit and looks quality, but I would love to know what the markup on these things are. It just seems so crazy to me that such a simple device could be sooo horrendously expensive. Really you can by a new engine for my honda civic for the price of one of these things. I love cinevate and am a big fan...but prices are gettin' up there if you ask me...course the Canadian dollar is dropping again which could be a valid reason:)

oh my god ...1900$ :O 800$ more than zacuto FF?? i'm all in for quality stuff, but sorry, this is way tooo much...

Hi Dennis
Congratulations on your product. Your sooooo right about your pricing policy. Living in a time were everything is made cheap in china, you couldn't be more accurate.

English philosopher John Ruskin wrote:

"There is hardly anything in the world that someone cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price alone are that person's lawful prey.
It is unwise to pay too much, but it is also unwise to pay too little.
When you pay too much, you lose a little money, that is all.
When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything because the thing you bought is incapable of doing the thing you bought it to do.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot...
It can't be done.
If you deal with the lowest bidder it is well to add something for the risk you run.
And if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better."

John Ruskin wrote this Law of Business around 1860. It was never more true than today!

Tomas, the comparable Zacuto product would be their flippable unit at $1600. Add the zip gears, .8 pitch gear, and you're into the $1800 range.

Our unit is currently priced at $890 (introductory), is made completely of CNC aluminum (including the focus knob), includes 3 annodized aluminum (not plastic) focus gears...and carries a lifetime warranty. It also differs from the Zacuto rig as not only can it be used lefty/righty, but you can reverse rotation directions on either side. The unit is designed to be used side and invert mounted, and the reason for this will become clear next week. Down the line a bit, you'll have another transmission option as well as 19mm mounting mount. Both are interchangeable with existing parts. Once folks get these in hand, we're completely confident the discussion on price will be over :)

Peter, thanks for the quote. I couldn't agree more.

Cheers,
Dennis.

From scarletuser: "Following "conventional" pricing, the unit should be retailing at about $1900."

Key word: SHOULD. I missed that the first time, too. hah!

I've used the indi focus gear with great results and this follow focus with carbon rails were just a fraction of most of these high priced gadgets.

Indirails = a small rock
Brevis FF=nailgun

They'll both do the job (IE drive in the nail!), but they aren't even comparable. Though it still manages to turn my gears, the indifocus is rubbish compared to these FFs.

Dennis, just to clarify,
The point of the flippable Z-focus is to be able to switch from operator side to asistant side without having to remove the matte box. see how: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YABlzi4safQ
I don't think that is the comparable unit to yours. The standard Z-focus is the comparable unit unless I'm not getting how this works.

Still waiting to replace a stolen ff a few months back. Have been waiting for a few new ones to come about. Price seems about the range Im looking at. My real issue is, OK theres three I am looking at and no way to test any of them (in a shop or other) without buying. How do you decide what to purchase if youve never tried the unit? :S Im stuck. Even if a guy next door got this new unit from Dennis, still how would I compare?

If theres anyone out there, a professional, who can compare these on cam in decent resolution, that would help. But still theres the preference component when it comes to feel.

Sorry Dennis, product looks great, just venting :p

Oh and will you be producing gears (cant remember size of the top of my head) for 2/3" broadcast lenses?

Just an FYI. If you go to the Fresh DV website you can see a comparison of a few different FF units side by side. Unfortunately the cinevate FF wasn't available at the time so it's not in there, but at least you can see the others in action.
