It's early days...but what hotel for NAB 2011?

I have to plan things well in advance from Down Under. This will be my first trip to NAB. I'm taking the family so I want to get some accomodation locked in. We have two teenage boys (15 & 16), so what would be a good hotel close to the exhibition and to entertainment. I don't want top-of-the-line but a really good central 4-star hotel is my aim.

Should I wait for official NAB hotel offers or just go through an online booking site ot travel agent?

Cheers,
Peter

I have to say I'm a big fan of the MGM Grand. Good rooms, great restaurants, and it's either a free (I think) shuttle ride or a comfortable Monorail ride to the Convention Center.

The Mirage would also be a good place to stay, I think.

Mick is right MGM is great.

I stay there because they have great restaurants and a nice food court. So if you need to grab a quick or cheap meal you can. Also there is a Starbucks there.

Its nice after a long day of NAB to not have to go hit the strip if you don't want to.

The other great thing is it is about as far away from the Convention Center as you can get. That might not sound like a plus but it forces you to buy a monorail pass. Then you can get up and down the strip all week without a car. it is only a 5 minute ride to the CC.

I always go MGM. Nothing is really in comfortable walking distance of the CC except the Hilton. So Stay where you want and grab a monorail pass. A week long pass is only about 65 bucks. Much cheaper than a car rental.

I'm definitely going to book my NAB accomodation tonight. It looks like the MGM Grand, but I will have my wife and two teenage boys with me (15 and 16) so I want to pick a hotel that is suitable and in the best location for the family. I'm not too worried about being close to the convention centre. If anyone else can chime in with advice that would be great before I pull the trigger on the MGM.

Try Stratosphere. It's about 25 min walk from NAB but last year I booked the hotel 2 weeks before NAB at hotwire and it was $27/night for a great room

go to NABshow.com

They have all their hotels listed there and you can book through them... i think they maybe higher than going direct or using a special.

But the info is there :-)

I'm staying at T.I. -always a pleasant stay.

Hey guys,

Will be my first time there too. Looking at this map:

http://www.lvcva.com/standard-maps.jsp?whichDept=vegas-downtown

It SEEMS there are a number of hotels in walking distance. You still recommend a monorail pass? Thanks for any insights!

NO, downtown is the wrong map to look at. The Las Vegas Convention Center is a couple long blocks off the strip, a couple miles away. There are a few hotels within reasonable walking distance of LVCC though most people would rather not walk more than they have to after being on their feet all day. The NAB shuttle bus system is great for the strip and a few more distant hotels (figure 30-45 min each way), and the monorail is reasonable though you'll still be doing some walking unless you stay at one of the handful of places where it stops. Getting from the Imperial Palace stop to Ceasars across the street is a very long hike.

If cost is a factor like it usally is, a nearby walkable location like the Sahara or the Riviera can't be beat at $40-$50, though in-house restaurants are nowhere near what an MGM or NYNY has. But I never wanted to stay in a monstrous hotel with 4000 rooms anyway.

First timers should consider saving money on a room and instead renting a car for $30 a day to explore the city and the surrounding area. Cruise the strip and see the inside of some casinos where all parking is vast and free, see downtown (briefly), drive over to the Hard Rock Casino, or to the Rio for the parade and buffet, or into the desert for Red Rock Canyon, Hoover Dam, etc. One memorable year I flew in early Sunday and splurged on a convertible for the day. For us northern boys who have been inside most of the winter, that is the absolute best way to spend the day and experience the strip at night.

I know this is extremely last minute but I don't suppose anyone wants to split a room? Hell if you've booked one and have a couch to spare that works too. I am looking towards getting in monday and staying no more than 2 nights, but I am flexible if you are willing to share the space.
