It's been a few years since...

Hello,
I am new to this discussion board and would like some advice on getting 'back to speed'. It's been a few years since I worked in the film industry (1978). Since then, I've been the production manager for a midwest television affiliate (using 1" video format) and owned an industrial video production facility. Last year, I purchased Adobe Premier 6.5. It was fairly easy to pick up and use, however a family member who is part of this discussion board recommended that I ask:

If you had $50k to invest in a broadcast quality production facility, what would you purchase? (from camera, editing and special effects equipment, etc.)

I know this is a loaded question, as I mentioned earlier however, it's been a few years since I've been active... I would appreciate any feedback on this topic.

Respectfully,
javatom

For one person budget I would go straight to AVID.
and blow the whole budget on just the editing system......

Edit:

After posting above nasty comment, I have re-thought my position. As this is not a place to argue FCP vs AVID, I am laying down my sword.

I am in the same boat as javatom working on a budget for a startup media company. Currently I have one HVX, and an XL1, looking at purchasing 1 more HVX and a full FCP editing system. I moved from Premiere 6.5 to FCP 3 years ago because it was easy to transition between FCP version 4 and premiere without spendng thousands on training. I am currently looking at spending around 17k on my editing setup. That includes software licenses, an 8 core mac pro, KONA 3, dual 30" monitors, broadcast monitor, sound etc.

There is a marketability factor to consider. As a standalone production facility,
you definately want to seperate yourself from the mini-dv cam and a single
mac crowd. AVID is still a 'brandname' that can and does attract producers.

With 50K to spend, your business plan, targeted clientele and marketing
strategy will determine your gear.

Heck, he may be better served not buying anything and hiring freelancers
with gear and pump 40K into marketing.
