Surfing through t.v. Land this evening and watched a little bit of Ebert & Roeper (Man I miss Siskel) and lo and behold Ebert said something that made me think:
Ebert questioned peoples take (specifically referring to BAD BOYS 2) on the movie "It was okay". He was intrigued by this kind of response to a film and said "life is too short to waste on a film that was okay".
Now, I don't particualry pay mind to any critic or anyones opinion for that matter when it comes to film as that it is a subjective matter and is a matter of personal taste but what it did make me think was how many times I have said "It was okay" after watching a movie.
It made me realize that there is more crap being made every day. In fact, it is few and far between when I come out of a movie saying "Oh my god that movie kicked major ****ing ass".
Maybe I'm just getting older, but I find myself saying more and more that a movie was "okay" as if that is acceptable. And it's not. Is it up to people like us to put the magic back in cinema? Seems like a long way off as I fondle my, er, DVX but I don't want to make films that people walk away from saying "It was okay".
Thats my take.
