It finally feels real.

I've been editing for a few years now. Sometimes stuff I shot, sometimes not. But always standard def. I've gotten pretty good both behind the camera and at the edit station. My clients are consistently happy with my work, even when I wish it had turned out better.

Lately I've been working with some RED footage, shot by khendrix2. It's been fun to play with in Redcine and FCP, and I outputted an SD DVD yesterday of some footage. It was fun and it looked pretty darn good.

But today changed everything. I converted the R3D files to prores and outputted from FCP at 1080P. I keep looking at the clips over and over again on my monitor. The footage is amazing. I finally feel like a professional. It doesn't make sense because I have cut some pretty kickass stuff over the past few years. I can't explain it. It literally feels like a fog has been lifted. i am extremely excited.

Of course, now I have to look into a BluRay burner so i can deliver this way. Oh, and an HD projector for the house, and a 1080P LCD ...Man, there's always a reason to spend money.

i'd be interested in seeing some clips of the red footage, jim. do you have a website to put it up on?

Yes, I hope to get it on our site in the next day or so. I was going to wait until I had more footage to put on it (so far it's just scenery, no people), but I can always update it later. I'll let you know when I get it on there.

awesome Jim. Its great to get some emotional payoff. Would love to see the clip.

Regarding the LCD - Im using a 50" Sony Bravia (100mhz / 24p playback) to view my finished footage. Kicks plasma to the curb.

Man, I would love to have something like that. Currently trying to justify a 32"

I've been trying to compress the reel for the web, but the aspect ratio keeps getting skewed. I'm trying to figure that out, so I'll put the reel up once I get it right.

As nice as the downsampled footage looks, seeing 4k footage projected in 4k is a complete mind freak. Nothing short of a quasi-religious experience. Even a 2k image has only 25% of the original data. 75% of all the data you started with has been ripped away.

Yeah, these compressed files are quite a disappointment. Seeing the footage at NAB on a 4K was nothing short of amazing.
