Issuses with my computer and CS3

have used the various versions of Premiere Pro on a lop top with very good results. This included using G-Tech Raid 0 drives for the project and media.

However I have steeped up to a Dell T7400 work station and all operation heck is breaking loose.

Windows XP 32 bit SP3
4 Gigs Ram
Dual 2.5 Ghz Quad core proccesors
SAS 10,000 rpm raid 0 drives for the "C"drive.
Lacie Firewire 800 card to run the G-tech drives
G-tech E-sata ES array with esata rocket raid card
nVidia 8800 512 GTS card with current drivers

I edit HDV from a Canon XHA1 using Cineform Aspect HD
Premiere Pro CS3 updated to 3.2.0

Footage is captured with HD link and plays fine in windows media player, but tying to import the video cause the program to crash. sometimes with a fatal error message, other times the program simply disappears. This also happens when rendering an already established time line or trying to export a finished project. It is so bad, the system is completely unuseable.

There are no Windows XP warnings or errors and programs like AE work fine.

I have done most of the things mentioned in the various posts, such as:

Making sure the rendering preference is set to "Memory""

Using the 3 GB switch

Uninstalling, and reinstalling Premiere

Stating the Program with the Shift key down,

Dumping Premiere Peferences

Running MSconfig and stopping unneeded BG programs.

I have only Cineform, and the Adobe CS3 Production Prem package installed on the computer.

I have tried to place the Media Cache and Program on the "C" drivee with only the media on the external drive.

I have tried to edit with the Program on one G-Tech drive and the Media on another drive.

I have tried to edit off the G-Tech drives where the program and the media are both on the external drive.

The ONLY THING that works is to place the Premiere program and the media on the "C" SAS drive array. This however isn't an option because of the amount of footage I have, and SAS drives don't come in much over 300 GB.

Why doesn't the external raid arrays operate now like the used to?

I edited for the last 3 years with the Alienware single P4 laptop without much of a problem - so I must be missing something, and a hardware conflict seems the most likely,

Can someone please help???

Thanks in advance

Greg

Greg,

This may not be much help but I have a T7400 and no problems (other than an occasional error, 1 in a 100)

PPCS3 ver. 3.2.0
quad core 3. Ghz
4 gig ram
Windows XP Pro 32 bit sp3
raid 0 I believe 7200
Nvidia Quadro FX4600

I run everything on the c drive, and back up to the external drive. Not optimal but it works fine. I edit mostly P2. May be something with the external raid? David

I had problems with the 3 GB Switch on my system once and work without it since then, maybe try the performance of your system without it.

Starting PPro with the Shift key held down dont do anything at all. You must manually delete the Preferences. The file Adobe Premiere Pro Prefs is the file you should delete and it can be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Adobe\Premiere Pro\3.0

What happens if you start a new Project > import media > export?

IMO, if none of the abowe work the fastest way to get back on track is to format the system drive and reinstall everything.

Keep the OS and Premiere Pro on an internal drive.

I second this. I have read numerous posts on this exact issue. Do as this member suggests & I suspect your problems will disappear.

Thanks for the advice. I am making some head way.

I have deleted the internal PPro preferences.

I also have stopped using the G-Tech e-sata raid. For somer reason, and I blame the rocket raid card over the drive array itself, PPro just doesn't like taking media off an on it. It can play fine, but accessing the drives for import, render or export doesn't work.
I have also tried a different slot for the raid card, and although it has the most recent drivers and the bios on the card has been flashed to the current version recommended by G-Tech, this has becme the center of my attention.

I have better luck running the regular firewire 800 drives by themselves.

Better yet, when I can afford more internal drives, I will stripe an internal raid and use it for programs. It works the best, and Adobe does say that they don't support external firewire drives, but how on earth are you supposed to squeeze all your media into your computer?

Still some problems, but I got some rendering and an export done.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions and taking the time to reply!
