Issues with DVD Distribution - DVD Studio Pro

Hi guys,

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, but I could do with some advice.

Last September, I finished off a Live DVD for a US Client, which was aimed for Worldwide DVD Release.

It's recently come to my attention that around 150 of the DVDs produced aren't playing properly in the EU/UK and USA. The error messages are varying;

• Region Not Found
• PAL Error
• Disc Cannot Be Played

I'll run you through everything on my end;

It was shot, produced and mastered in the UK, authored via DVD Studio Pro with the following settings;

• DDVD
• PAL Standard
• Playable Region Codes; ALL

The master was burnt onto a Verbatim DVD-R (after a lot of research, I came to the conclusion that these were the most stable, and the most widely used).

If all the issues were confined to the US, I'd know that the issue would be with the authoring, however with them being spread across, I can't see how any of what I did could be the issue.

Can only shed any light on what might be the issue?

How many discs were delivered in total? Did you make all the discs yourself or did you send the master disc out to be duplicated? No DVD run is 100% perfect and burned/duplicated discs will be more prone to error than replicated discs. If, say, you sent out 1000 discs and 150 were bad I'd guess you got a bad batch of DVD blanks at some point.

What I've always seen/heard over the years on the various forums is that NTSC DVDs will always play in a PAL DVD player, but the opposite is not true, so the PAL DVDs would be an issue in the US market from what I understand. That does not explain why you'd also have PAL customers with issues, so that could be another problem.

500 discs were delivered in total. I only supplied the master on a DVD-R to the Duplicators (please note, as the client arranged everything after post production, I have no idea if they were Duplicated or Replicated.

Sharbor, while I initially thought that the PAL Compatibility in the US would be an issue, others in the US have had no problems with playing the DVD on their DVD Player. Perhaps the lack of compatibility could be confined to the age of the DVD Player?

If you sent them a DVD-R master then they were duplicated but I'd venture a guess PAL in NTSC territory is the source of the problem. Maybe with Blu-ray players and HDTVs the abilty to play 50Hz material is more common but NTSC DVD players and NTSC sets being able to handle PAL material is rare here in the States.
