Issue with redrock and hvx not being able to focus!

Ok Just got my redrock, I have a shoot tomorrow.
I put it all together, zoom in all the way to focus on the ground glass and I can't. It gets to like MF24 and it can't focus that close when it is zoomed in. I have configured redrocks on other people's cameras just fine but for some reason my camera will not focus. So I have to zoom out a bit and then it focuses on the glass around MF22, but I feel like that isn't right. I also feel like the focus changes slightly when I zoom in or zoom out the tiniest bit, so I don't feel like it is accurate.

Is there some setting I have wrong on my HVX? Has anyone else experienced this?

Please help!

You shouldn't be zoomed in all the way on the ground glass. You want to be in far enough that the edges of the ground glass aren't showing.

The older adapter achromats and optics didn't accomodate maintaining focus during zooming, so any movement of the zoom will require refocusing. As long as you can get the full image and are focused you are fine. It seems like the flips changed that for reasons I have no understanding of but most of the newer units can tolerate quite a bit of zooming. You still should never focus by zooming in then pulling back as the focus point could change. Focus on the screen at the size you want to shoot.

No I understand that, but when you first put the redrock together, you want to zoom in all the way to focus on the ground glass and then zoom out til you can't see the edges. Right? And I am saying when I zoom in all the way, it will not focus, so I can't get perfect focus.

Read the previous post. It will not hold focus through a zoom. It doesn't matter, its not supposed to. It may not focus at all that close when zoomed in . Focus on on the screen when it is at the zoom size you want. That's how it works.

Chris, start here: www.start.redrockmicro.com

The tutorial will walk you through setting up the adapter and getting the proper back focus.

Ooops, Macaholic262 had it in his post. Doh' - sorry for the repeated info.

Yes read the tutorial, but I think the one thing everyone tries to ignore which should be In bold and underlined(enough of that right), is that you should begin this process with the iris wide open, and then once you have something in focus, close down the iris a bit.

If none of this works, then you either forgot to put on the achromat, or it wasn't sent to you, thus it skipped your mind since it wasn't in front of you.

Oh and don't try to back focus with the lens on...you'll end up with an image that is focused in the center, but out of focus at the edges....follow the directions...they are there for a reason......this isn't a television set, it's a precise optical piece of equipment.
