Issue with cuts in FCP 7 when transitioning between 2 seperate clips on my time-line

When using fcp7 on my laptop I notice an issue near cuts in my timeline. Basically, every time the the play-head rolls over a cut, there's a slight delay. The transition from 1 clip to another isn't smooth. Other than that it plays back fine. This makes it hard to see how an edit works between clips. Has anyone else experienced this and does anyone have any recommendations?
 
They are straight cuts and I'm playing them from an external firewire 800 g drive. Now its gotten worst.
 
Try playing with your RT Playback settings. Also if you're using huge ProRes files or processor-intensive H.264 you may see a delay as well. FW800 is fine but nothing beats a 4GB+ new laptop with a Thunderbolt RAID. Also make sure it's not something simple like a virus scanner or backup software running in the background and interfering.
