ISO Rating

I'm an old school film guy making the transition to digital on lower budget productions. I recently purchased an HVX and I need help on ISO settings. I checked the spec's and looked up the minimum luminance of 3 lx(F1.6 gain + 12db w/ shutter @ 1/24). Can anybody out there help me calculate this into ISO settings for my light meter. Any helpful advice regarding a possible sweet spot on the Leica lens is appreciated (preferred ISO, iris opening, and focal point for standard perpective). I appreciate any help you can offer.

Thanks,

Bill

I have an hvx close by but I was not interested in ASA rating (the camera has an internal circuit which compensates for some light variations (without adjusting the iris) Check this statement when you throw an ND filter (iris change is not proportional).

Here is what I think would be the procedure to determine the ASA:

Light an 18% grey card (500W? 5-6ft away) set the camera on 24P and shutter @1/48, gain 0. It will display the aperture on the LCD.

Now take an SLR camera, frame the same grey card, set the shutter at 1/30 and the aperture at the same value as your HVX indicated.

Change the ASA settings on the SLR camera till you get a proper exposure.
It may settle for (let's say!) 125 ASA.

The shutter speed was set at 1/30 (1/2 stop longer than 1/48 set on HVX)
That means the ASA must be higher (to allow the same aperture at a higher shutter speed, right?) If that's correct, the ASA should be (approx) 180-190 ASA.

The above figures are for practice of example only. The actual sensitivity of HVX 200 most likely will be different. If you think the procedure is right and determine the ASA, please post back, so we all know it.

Here is something that might help as well:

320 ISO (but the smaller f-stops aren't true T-stops, so it's 320 from 2.8 on down). All f-stops are good but stay away from f/11 in high-def, and I'd shy away from f/9.6 in HD too (although they're both fine for standard-def).

Barry,

Is the 320 for 5600K lighting. Additionally, I like to keep the shutter at 1/50 to keep a true film look. I know that cameras with a minimum lux of 2 at F-11 are 800 ISO for 3200K and 500 ISO for 5600K. Tom Musto has posted this on his website, please view the referenced website below:

Thank for the help guys in advance.

Testing, shooting a variety of scenes at 1/48 shutter in 24p mode and in 60/60p mode. In 60i/60p it's about 1/4 stop slower.
