ISO 25600!!!! Usable footy in NEX5N

Hi Guys

I'm posting this in its own thread because it is news of its own. Although I'm sure we'll see exactly how good/bad it is (in more extensive footage), it looks like the F3 heritage is going to infiltrate all of the SONY products from now on. This is the NEX-5N. New "King of the Hill" for micro budget film making. Just over 599 for body only. OOOHHHHH BABY!!!! This is GREAT NEWS for us ALL!!!!

This has to make the "kit" lens ENTIRELY more relevant. I doubt that I'll be cranking it up to ISO25600 for low light, but ISO12800....probably. This means that the kit lens, can reasonably be stretched out 3 STOPS MORE!!!! WOWSER!!!!!! Christmas came early!!!!! I was seriously wondering if we were going to get ONE more stop (IE, shoot at ISO6400 when needed). Heh....can't believe THREE stops past ISO3200!!!!!!

UPDATE: Keep your eyes on this guys. I'm so sorry, the post on the video indicates the ISO is at 25600. It appears that he may WELL have thought so. Unfortunately if you read down the posts, it appears that in video mode it is NOT capable of going that high. It's 'capped' (in video mode) at ISO3200. I'd be PERFECTLY happy if the mods were to change the title, as it appears that it is NOT ISO25600.

This is on the opposite side of the spectrum (at ISO200) F1.4 (....probably a little early to say "BABY F3", so I won't say it.)

(from video post)
- 1080p60 (YouTube rendered as 1080p30), 28 mbps
- 1/125, ISO200, 24mm, f1.4 (Nikkor lens)
- ECM-SST1
- tripod

Very interesting.

Hopefully this bodes well for the NEX VG20, as I think it uses the same sensor as the NEX 5N. Of course, that would mean the NEX 5N would also maybe make a good B-cam companion to the VG20.

From Eoshd on a post on personalview he says that you can't go higher than 3200 ISO for video and even if in photo mode you are higher 6400/12800 it will revert back to 3200 when you record video.

that does bode well for my first impression... 25600 looks like the 3200
to my knowledge, as you go higher in ISO the more you lose dynamic range. and the video shows similar DR. anyway cant wait for other reviews to come in

Thanks for the heads up! BUMMER!!!! :(

If that's the case, I hope the mods will change the name of this thread.

I didn´t think it improved over iso3200 ...well, it would make a great firmware update for sony , no ? It´s still one nice little camera for 7 benji´s ! And comparing it to 1600 on the gh1, it´s a marvel.

Anyone have links to actual footage rather than web-compressed footage? Hard to identify grain when the entire image is so chunky.

I'm not a "conspiracy" sort of a guy, but I do think that this thing could cause a "disturbance" in Sony's own line up. (As far as IQ is concerned.) Similar to the AF100 and the GH2. From a FEATURES perspective it's no contest. From an IQ stand point, the battles are all over this forum. I can already see the FS100/NEX5N comparisons. If this did INDEED shoot at ISO25600, it would cause even more disturbance than it is already going to. I'm NOT saying that any of these comparisons are valid or invalid, I am saying that there appears to be some SERIOUS MOJO in this little bad boy.....so comparisons are BOUND to crop up.

PS, kurth: I agree that it is a marvel. (From what I see so far....)
PPS, the only reason that one isn't in the mail, I have 350 credit at BestBuy, so I MUST WAIT FOR THEM...Rrrrrrr......

I have a 28mm lens, a fisheye adapter, a wide angle adapter, 2 SD cards, quick release.....and no bloody camera! B&H still don't have them in stock but you can buy them on ebay grrr!

From what I've seen the 5N is no competition for the FS100 in pure tech spec chart shooting pixel peeping terms.....but in the real world in good hands only cinematographers are ever gonna know the difference. The FS100 has a lot of options for messing with the picture profiles that I don't think a 5N hack could match. But there's a much greater chance the 5N will be hacked and could end up with a higher bit-rate than the FS100. The FS100 sensor is a lot more sensitive in low light and no hack is gonna change that but for $600 the 5N is a contender and has put a nail in the coffin of every APS-C DSLR. If the FS100 was the size, shape, and price of a 5D I'd get one. I'm waiting to see what Nikon and Canon have up their sleeves and in the meantime I'll be having lots of fun with the 5N.

ALL the new Sony cameras are going to shoot fantastic video and stills. I have no doubt about it. Sony wants business and they are going to crank out one hell of a line up. The A77, A65, Nex 5N, Nex 7 and the VG20 ARE GOING TO LOOK FANTASTIC. Mark my words. A couple of month from now a lot of people are going to be drooling all over them. Singing their praises, changing their tunes and of course saying: Oh, I was just waiting to see more samples but I knew they were going to be very good!

I'll be right behind you Buddy! :)
ps: I'm a Kiwi. :)

My feeling is that NEX5n will be a very popular item and as has been said the Dark Horse and for the price a killer ..... but I would still like the Nex7 ....... 2 nex5n or 1 nex7 hmm.........LOLOLOL

I don´t see anything wrong with making the choice between 3 nex 5´s ...and one a77, or one vg20....for example. And compared to the nex 7....I´d prefer the flexible evf . One small tripod, one gorilla pod , and a small bag that holds 3 nex 5´s .
