Isara's First Video Log (vlog)

Kirk Gillock

Rebel with a cause
We've had numerous people tell us to make a vlog so we finally got hip with the times and made one. It's not nearly as clever or interesting as Mino's but it gets the job done.

Check it out!

The quality is bad because I sold my DVX. The music is Bob Sinclar, "Love Generation". I know we shouldn't use coprighted music without permission so an e-mail was sent to his record label with a link to the video. If they complain we'll remove it.

Thanks Briceman, Terry, and Horse.

Terry, that's a great idea. Or maybe an HVXcast or a REDcast. Any idea how to made a video podcast? Is it just an mpg4 file?

The only thing that distinguishes the two are that a "podcast" has an RSS feed to propogate it. Other than that, it's just semantics.

Go forth to Feedburner and learn. :)

Looks like the software Isara uses has a module that will create podcasts. Thanks for the tip on how to be hip!

Once you create an RSS feed, you'll be able to have peeps download future podcasts automatically through iTunes (i.e. they don't have to navigate to the video link on your website to do so).

Whenever they open iTunes, it'll let them know you have a new episode available for them to download and they can do it right then and there.

I don't think you need to worry about that. Your podcast is an opportunity to explain why they'll still need to check out your site, updates on projects, etc. I can't imagine someone being all into your podcasts only to ignore the website itself.

You're not driving people away from your website by having them download your video podcast as an RSS feed from iTunes. Rather, this will make them think of Isara when they just wanted to open iTunes and play a few songs. ;) You see, now you're getting their attention in a new/additional way. :)

Sadly, less than 10% of your members will even take advantage of the RSS feed (it's still too new). The rest will just download MP4s from your website.

Good point. Will be adding the mp4 to the list of podcasts once the file finishes uploading. Speaking of, what is the typical size for a video podcast (5min)? 5mb, 10mb, 15mmb?

The ones I've seen range from about 2 minutes - 7 minutes.

Former MTV "veejay" Adam Curry is considered to be the father of podcasting (The PodFather). You can check out his "Daily Source Code" video podcasts at http://curry.podshow.com.

Will do. But what about file size? What do you think is the average for a 5min video?

Do you get the feeling we're the only ones reading this? This is when a chatroom would come in handy.

Most are pretty heavily-compressed for the sake of the downloader. However, the H.264 flavor of MP4 is the latest, greatest video compression for podcasts and it creates fairly large file sizes... but they look great.

Having said that, I think anything under 20MB is fair these days.

Pk......if I make isara.com my internet start page (homepage?), then will each time I log on give isara a click credit or do I need to click on something on the page?

If you make Isara your homepage, then you'll be like the rest of us. :)

Each time Isara loads it "counts". So, yes, making Isara your homepage will have the same result.

Thanks for all the help, Terry.

Marlene - Basically there's no "points per click" or anything like that. Just make it your homepage and watch us grow. Being someone's homepage is the ultimate honor and you'd be amazed how much the hit add up to make a difference. See those ads in the top corner of DVXuser? Our clicks/visits made those ads possible. If nobody came here then nobody would bother advertising here. :) Hopefully, if Isara can get some more visitors, then we'll have advertisers too. Then we can create bigger and better charity projects. All because of web traffic. Not donations. Let me know if there's anything you want to see on the homepage (news, weather, etc.) and we'll try and improve the site.

I hear spam is a delicacy in some parts. :)

You're just making sure our friends here dont miss out on the joy!

:)
