Is this Possible?

Speaking of VOB file I have a question about it... I've opened a vob from a vts folder I want to change the aspect ratio because it's not playing properly in dvd players. The picture looks full screen and looks like it's coming out of the tv. I've tested it on 9 dvd players and all did the same. When I changed the option to 4:3 letterboxed on my dvd.. It looked like a weird widescreen...black bars and sometimes grey depending on which scene of the movie. I want to change this so when someone puts my short into a dvd it will play normal widescreen without changing anything. I've put the audio track under the vob file in vegas so that's fine. All I need is to fix the aspect ratio and maybe some stuff in the video, can this be done? What would I need to render it as ? avi and then use winavi to make it back into a dvd file vob.
Right now I'm testing it and rendering as avi with 23.976 fps NTSC 24p DV widescreen settings. Could I loose resolution , picture quality by doing it this way?

Re: Is this Possible?

I wanted 16:9 since I did have the adapter on the panny when I shot the film but what I really want is when someone puts a dvd into their dvd player it will play widescreen. I've rendered the vob file into avi with changing the settings but the I used winavi to make it back into a dvd file vob it seems like it lost some quality of original picture and in parts of the film seems shaky.. so I have no idea if this will be a possibility.

Re: Is this Possible?

When you set the DVD player to 4:3 letterbox (which is where it should be set if it's connected to a 4:3 TV), what was "weird" about the widescreen?

As for the color of the bars, it's probably an optical illusion, based on the fact that your 0 IRE blacks in the video are blacker than the 7.5 IRE bars generated by the DVD player -- especially in any fades to black. They will look black when there's not a lot of black in the picture and grey when there is, 'coz, well, they ARE grey. Dark grey, but grey.

Re: Is this Possible?

Hmm.. I guess the bars look bigger or not the same as if I put a movie I rent.

Now the real problem I'm having is when I render it I'm getting different quality then the original version. My short was edited by someone else but I want to make few changes and also change the score which I would lay the track. What can I do or is this possible for me to get same quality and make changes in Vegas with the original VOB?

also when rendering which should I choose... if it makes a difference...

NTSC DV 24p (inserting 2-3 pulldown)
or
NTSC Widescreen DV 24p (2-3 pulldown)
or
NTSC DV 24p (inserting 2-3-3-2 pulldown)
or
NTSC Widescreen DV 24p (2-3-3-2 pulldown)

Re: Is this Possible?

Movies you rent come in different aspect ratios – and none of them will be 16:9 (1.78:1). The closest will most likely be 1.85:1, which is a little wider than 16:9.

I think you burned the disc fine; I think your DVD players may have been set up incorrectly – did you have them set to “widescreen” but hooked up to a 4:3 TV? That would be consistent with the behavior you described.

If you’re going to DVD, you probably want to use MPEG-2 and one of the DVD-Architect formats (widescreen, 24p). Those you list are AVI templates.

Re: Is this Possible?

My dvd player settings were set to 4:3 pan&scan... when I switched it to 4:3 letterbox or 16:9 it plays widescreen with the bars being weird (bigger then usual) but I guess that's what true 16:9 is and not what the movies I rent. I'm just confused why everyones dvd players are set this way that my short is always playing messed up on the screen, maybe its only here in Canada.

When I played it on Widescreen TV this problem wasn't there. I think I will need to inform people that my short is "anamorphic." or can I change it somehow.

Okay so when I render the vob file into mpeg-2 I should not loose any quality? The quality should be the same as in the original vob file? or will there be some loss.

Thanks David for helping my headache go away.
