Is this D70 a good deal?

I've been looking into getting a D40 or D40x, and then I saw this offer for a used D70:

"Nice D70 with 1gb ultra II card, battery/charger//// nikkor AF 28-80mm 1:3.3-5.6 G /// nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6 G AF/// all in great shape

the above is $600"

Just wanted to get some of y'all's advice before I made an offer, or before I blow off the deal.

Thanks!

depends what kind of lenses you want. I would say you can normally get a regular D70 for about $300 - 400. So if those lenses are something you want then its not a bad deal but if you'd rather get faster lenses or just choose your own then finding just a body might be better. Note the "D70s" is more expensive.

Agree with Dan... $300-$400 is the current market value for the D70, $50-$100 more for the 'S' (range based upon shutter releases)... plus 28mm-80mm is a very weird focal length on a crop camera, not wide enough or long enough...

Yeah I paid $400 for d70 with the kit lens (18-55?) used at B&H. I wouldnt pay more than that. Neither of those lenses look all that great either. Think about what you'll shoot and what lens would work best for that. A decent single lens that can do it all is the 18-200 VR. Not the fastest, not the sharpest, but damn thats some range to work with.

Interesting...thanks for the info. Now I'm wishing I'd pulled the trigger a couple weeks ago. Costco had a deal on the D40 with an 18-55 and a 70-200 for $599, new.

i prefer the D40x but it is pricier, heck if you are just starting out take a look at the old D50 too, decent noise response, works with all lenses (D40 wont) and still pretty small and light. Also because of its electronic shutter if you work with flashes at all (you should learn to) you can sync up to 1/2000 of a second i believe.

I'm guessing this was the 55-200, since the 70-200 is like $1800 new.

Also, if you are going to get the 55-200 make sure it's the VR version.

D50, eh? Hadn't thought of that.

Dan, that deal did NOT have the VR telephoto. I think it was the 55-200, too.

For me, I don't think the body is gonna matter for me. The D40 would have enough challenges for me to get used to since I'm new to the DSLR scene. What I am more concerned about is the lenses. Anyway, thanks for the help, all!

lenses are much more important. Spend money on glass, buy an older used body. You can always upgrade bodies and then have nice glass to go with it.

You can get a D100 for $300 used that will still have more than 50,000 actuations left on the shutter... Do that and then invest in glass, either solid primes or fast zooms.
