is this conflict of interest?

Here is a topic that I was hoping I could get some feedback on. I am currently working for a video production company, and also starting my own video business on the side. I was doing freelance work and figured it would be better in the long run to just file the paperwork and become a sole proprietorship (mainly for tax purposes). I do plan on having that be my full time business in the future, but for now I need to pay the bills so I work for this other company. I am offering video services( mostly music video, movie shots, and equine videography) while he mostly does wedding videos, so its not like i am trying to go after his market. I'm just curious if anyone else is doing the same thing or if anyone has any comments or advice.

I don't see a problem with it at all. You're not really doing the same types of projects, so you're not cutting in on his action.

i wouldn't become a sole propietor tho, look into forming a LLC...then no one can't take your house if they sue you

A good rule of thumb is are you afraid to tell him about it. If you are then you already know the answer to the question. if your on the level about not cutting into his business then there should be some communication there. If he is not looking to to expand into those markets or if you are not a full time 1099 employee then I don't see a problem.

Not to be harsh but if your worried about it . . . " is he going to find out ?" . . . " am i doing the right thing ?" maybe you ought to look at it again.

Again I don't know anything about your situation, so . . . .
