is this being a Glory Hog?

if i shoot a film and handle the camera just as much as my DP (selecting shots, shooting, etc) does that need to be reflected in the credits?

oh, yea, me and the DP are cool. there's no tension especially over something like this. i was just wondering.

now that i think about it i don't think i've ever seen a Director/DP credit in a movie??

It happens - Rodriguez, Soderbergh (though he often uses an alias for it)...and a few others.

But, if this is just you and your friend working together - I'd let it go.
It's not like you're worrying about union rules or anything like that.

A DP for a "real" movie usually doesn't "handle" the camera, or at least not necessarily so.
They are usually sitting on their asses somewhere watching a monitor and barking orders to the gaffer and camera operator.

If handling the camera were the criteria that earns a DP credit then every camera op would be co-DP.

It's more about who is designing and planning the execution of shots in collaboration with the director to realize the director's vision.

Of course it's a bit more complicated in this instance because you are both operating and involved in the design of the shots. I'd ask yourself if someone else were pitching in and operating the camera for those shots would you be considering that they should share DP credit. If the answer is no then maybe think of that as a separate hat your wore, just like the cable lugger hat you wore, and the grip hat you wore, and all the other ways you had to pitch in to make your movie.

I'd say give him full credit and if that does not work drop him on you're next project and do it you're self as Luis said Rodriguez style

yeah you're being a glory hog. is a director's credit not good enough?

generally there aren't Director/DP credits on big time movies because of union rules. But Soderberg does a lot of his own DPing and actually does it under a different name.

yea, i didn't know. it's a four day shoot and he's only there for two of the days. i'll be doing his job on the last two days. we're cool and he doesn't care either way so we decided to just put "A Film by" and insert his name and my name.

jeez. it's really not that serious. this is a short film not Titanic. it's been almost a month since i got the answer to this question so maybe you should check this one out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beating_a_dead_horse

Good point, listing your own name over and over in the credits is like beating a dead horse. Don't be so hard on yourself though - it's not a real film so nobody cares.

list my name over and over? i said that???

you're reaching for straws now, but good comeback...and it only took you 2 hours and 47 mins to think of it.

I recently worked on an independent low/no-budget film and we would do our best to PREVENT the DP (a very slender woman with a very good eye) from moving the camera or lifting anything heavy. Maybe we were being too protective but it was out of respect, too.

For us it didn't matter much who operated the equipment. What counted was her expertise in realizing the director's vision for the production.

Robert Rodriquez.
Steven Soderbergh.

It does happen occasionally.

I've heard audiences chuckle, at El Mariachi I think, at how many times Rodriguez lists his own name.

There was a group of 4 seniors in high school who entered the same 48-hour film festival as myself.

They were the only 4 in the crew, and they spent 2 minutes of their 7 minute film on credits. They literally listed all 4 of them for every single crew position imaginable (even PAs).

Fortunately, they didn't lose the audience's respect for this; they already had. Their film sucked.

WOW Bball - that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

Of course now you understand why the DVX Fests restrict people to 10 seconds of credits.
:)
