Is this an unprofessional casting?

i found this recreation center that is well kept and they allow you to rent out rooms by the hour for like $17.

i want to hold my casting in one of the rooms which holds 35 people max and has room to set up tables for my three casting helpers, but the thing is there is not enough room outside the room for actors to wait. so they would all have to come inside and they would wait in line until it's there turn.

do you see this as a problem or making other actors nervous to perform?

that's a good idea, however i'm not sure if they will allow that or if both rooms will be available at the same time. tomorrow i am going up there ad will have to ask. i guess i could easily get a friend to rent an additional room though if its a big deal.

Yeah, I have to agree with that. Not only will it tip your hand as being inexperienced, it makes for a very unprofessional first impression.

Besides, many actors like to run lines and stuff before they go in to warm up.

I agree. As an actor it would feel *really* wierd in both ways - being watched by "the competition" as I auditioned, and then seeing them struggle to get comfortable as I watched them.

An audition should be completely private for each actor unless they are playing different roles and two or more do a scene together. I don't like that approach either, although it does happen sometimes. The problem is that your "audition partner" (who you just met) might throw you off your game in unexpecetd ways, actually worsening your own audition.

Best is one at a time.

Yes, they should be private auditions. For a couple of reasons. One is that it makes it a bit more personal and the comfort level of course. Two is that you will probably have some good actors and some pretty bad actors. They shouldn't be mixed and it also gives you a chance at some privacy for consultation with your people and you can say things to those good actors that you probably won't say to the bad actors. You can also give a bit of direction and have someone do a read in a different manner if you like them.

You can stick with one room, but definitely make the others wait outside. To alleviate the problem, have someone waiting outside with them with a signup sheet (so they have something to do) AND, schedule them into time slots so as to minimize wait times

thanks for the advice and good thing we ended up finding a large room that could be partioned off because about 60 people ended up coming out for the auditions. i can't imagine how crazy it would've looked in just one room.
