Is this a good tripod?

I'm trying to figure out a good tripod & sticks combo to use with my SGpro and DVX (I also recently got an HV20 but I know if a tripod can handle the DVX, the tiny HV20 won't be an issue).

So far I'm looking at the Bogen 503 HDV and 745XB legs. I don't know much about tripods though and really could use a recommendation for general 35mm-adapter friendliness (i.e. enough room to support camera + adapter & rails + external monitor, follow focus and so on). The last thing I want to do is buy a tripod that can't keep up as I add more accessories to the rig. Any advice would be really appreciated.

Read through this thread first and you'll get a sense of what you're available options are in addition to lots of opinions.

It sounds like you're budget is around $500, in which case your options are pretty limited. Even around $1000 there aren't a ton of choices. But you'll hear over and over that a great tripod will far outlast your camera and you shouldn't skimp on one.

If you're planning on adding a bunch of stuff to your rig, you should probably plan on something that can handle 15 to 20 pounds.

Leo, thanks for the reply. I'm okay with stretching the budget since, as you said, this is something that will outlast the camera and is worthwhile to spend a little extra for. I'm looking at the Cartoni F101 Focus and the Bogen 519 now - sounds like the 503 isn't going to cut it. I'll read through the thread you linked and see what else I can find out.

I love the Vinten Vision 3 head

the head alone is almost 1000. - But the cool thing is they sell counter balance springs that swap in and out easily. This means you could have the perfect tripod for your DVX, DVX + SGPro, and your HV20.

Thanks for the recommendations. At the moment I'm leaning pretty heavily towards the Libec LS-55 - fits the budget and from the sound of it seems like a really well-made tripod that has enough weight support to handle future accessory add-ons.

I love my ls55, I would get both mid spreader and ground spreader.
If you have any questions dont hesitate.
