Is this a good idea: making low rez versions of photos in the timeline while editing?

I'm making a film with a lot of photos. I scanned the photos at really high resolutions, as PNG's and TIFF's, because I dont know when I'll want a close up. That said, I'm not sure which photos I'll use.

I'm thinking that, while editing, I'll make low-rez versions of my photos, edit with them, and then right before exporting, reconnect them to larger, higher quality versions.

Does that make sense? Is that a good idea?

How large are your super really high res images? FCP will choke and produce errors on anything too big (like pushing 4K IIRC). I don't think automatically replacing the low res images with the high res images will work because changing the image resolution is basically changing the image dimensions which means your reframing won't match up. For example, if you have a 100x100 image and push in by 10% you would have pushed in by 10 pixels. If you replace that 100x100 image with a 1000x1000 image then that 10% push in is now 100 pixels. It's been a while since I've worked with images in FCP 7 but I seem to remember wanting to do something similar and it not working.

I don't think that will buy you any faster editing time. Are you experiencing slow editing response with these large images? I've never had any problems with large photos, either in FCP 7 or beyond. But I always could be wrong.
