Is there an app that indexes external drives?

I have about 15 external hard drives that have archives of old projects. They are not very well organized. Does anyone know of an application that will index them, keep the index in some database, and then when i need to search for an old file it will tell me which drive and directory it's located in, even if the drive is not plugged in? I've been copying and pasting the root directories into an excel spreadsheet. There's got to be something better.

This is what Final Cut Server did better than anything. FCP X now has FCSvr cataloging and metadata functions inside it now. But use Toast 11 Pro as Lez says. I'm pretty sure it comes with that cataloging function, but check their web site to be sure. And, it has awesome Blu Ray authoring abilities, too, for way less money than Adobe.
