Is there a great workflow article out there for the AF100 and FCP?

I'm a bit lost. I shot some test shots at 1080p at 24p- when I inserted the card into my MacBookPro and opened FCP it very conveniently found the card and all the clips were there in the L&T window. It transcoded them to ProRes and they very conveniently ended up in my browser. However, the next card I inserted had the same file names...this seems like a disaster in the making. I see that I can make individual file names in the right hand panels of the L&T window, but do I have to go one by one? Or is the best way to keep file names different to set that up in the camera? And if so, how? Anyway, if someone's written a comprehensive workflow article, please let me know. Thanks.

I don't have an article, but I've worked in FCP for years and came from a tape-based workflow. This is what I do for AVCCAM video in Final Cut Pro, it works very well if I ever need to recapture a project from the original AVCHD files (whether to create a new master, edit an old project, or capture at a higher bitrate):

Step 1: Name the card image in Finder (or Disk Utility). Usually I will do some shorthand abbreviation, like abbreviating a project and then labeling the date or card # (I just shot a festival on about 100gb of cards, each card is labeled INDIEFEST-#). Keep it short, because the name is subject to FAT naming conventions.

Step 2: Open up Disk Utility, create a new read-only image from your SD card. Save it. I am paranoid so I make 2 copies and save them on different drives.

Step 3: Eject the SD card/mount the new card image, check the video in Log and Transfer or some other viewer to verify all the video made it.

The disk image name will be read by L&T as the reel #, which will help you sort through all your footage and keep things separate. You should still manually label all the clips you plan to transfer just to keep things well organized - this is a habit that I feel is being lost in the new tapeless world, but it's one that will save you loads of time later on. As an added bonus, if you ever need to recapture a project for any reason (media drive dies, media gets deleted, etc) you can easily mount all the disc images used in the project and do a batch capture.

As far as I know, all these steps aren't really necessary because FCP reads the metadata on your SD card and can differentiate between the different Clip #1's. BUT you will be spared a lot of time and headache if you get things properly logged.

Let me add a specific workflow question to this if I may- I have a few days before I start production and I want to prepare the archival footage for editing. The archive footage is 640X480 in 29.97. It's actually all in VOB files at the moment (that's how it was given to me.) I have compressor (FCStudio 3) and mpeg streamclip.

How should I export this footage to QT to make the editing workflow easiest. Thanks for any info.

Also... what is Partial Span in the Naming presets menu of FCP? Thanks.
