Is their going to be a new version of Vegas

As far as what I *need* for it to have: background rendering, full-fledged fully-integrated HDV support, and full-fledged firewire DVCPRO-HD support.  If that's all they add, I'd be a happy camper and would pay the $200 upgrade price.

You know, Barry, I was starting to feel like the lone ranger on the background rendering prairie . . .

I asked 'em about it months ago, but didn't get any response yet. I think background rendering would make Vegas *seem* so much faster, even though there wouldn't necessarily need to be that much different about it. There's just *so much* wasted processor time, when the user is thinking, or scrolling, or some other low-processor-usage task, or answering the phone, or whatever... and all that time could be spent background-rendering, keeping a permanently-updated copy that's always ready to play back at full real-time...

I'm really hoping they add it, and that they can do so without compromising stability of course.

Not too much to be gleaned from that. Macworld wouldn't be the place to announce a new version of a Windows-only app.

No, it wouldn't have to change much at all. It would just be something like an auto pre-render -- but then, you still have to be able to work while it's going on for it to be "background."
Looks like a started a good thread. This may be a stupid question, but what is nested timelines.
I don't know the best way to describe it. The theory behind it (as I don't know how each software implements it), is that you have contained media events in your timeline that are "nested events"...meaning that they're not actually a single continuous media event, but are actually a reference to a separate edit timeline. Instead of rendering out a two-minute clip with 14 cuts...you can drop in a nested clip that occupies 2 minutes of your timeline and references the edit file containing the 14 cuts.

Using a nested timeline, you can edit your project in sections and drop those sections into a "master" timeline without rendering individual scenes. As the nested clips only reference a separate edit, you can go back to that edit and change things around...those changes will be reflected back in the nested clip without taking any rendering steps.

Essentially, it allows for maximum flexibility and organization.

With nested timelines, you can take a 40 scene 2-hour film and build a "master" timeline containing only 40 clips. Without a nested timeline, you'd have to render each scene individually and drop them in a timeline, or build a 2 hour timeline of every single edit, effect, title and transition.

You dont think Sony backing Apple , means they really dont plan on their NLE becoming a real player in the field especially when they have their igh end system?

Porting to the Mac=Very Expensive (probably even more so now with the new OS)

Oh, business deals are what they are and no more. Remember when Apple was on its deathbead a few years ago and survived only because Microsoft gave it a shot in the arm?

So no, I don't find much significance re: Vegas in what goes on at MacWorld.

Re: Is their going to be a new version of Vegas

I'm not sure what to make of that -- I didn't see any of the speech, etc. But would it be Sony backing Apple? Near as I can tell, the big announcement as far as Sony was concerned is that iMovie, FCP-HD and FCP-Express HD are all going to support HDV. That's a big thing for Sony, because as it is, FCP-HD supports Panasonic's DVCPRO-HD. And quite a few editors use FCP. So while Sony intends to make a big splash on PC's with Vegas, if they want Mac users to support their camera, they need FCP support, which is what they just got.

Re: Is their going to be a new version of Vegas

I do find it difficult to believe that Sony would turn its back on 90% of the computing world. Particularly seeing as they offer their own line of PCs.

Re: Is their going to be a new version of Vegas

Am I missing something?

it seems to me that the only significance of having sony at mac world is to imply that HDV editing is a good feature. You can't get people excited about a new capability if they've almost never heard of the cameras that use it...right?

Re: Is their going to be a new version of Vegas

I would like to see VST plugin support and XSend in the next version of Vegas.
