Is their going to be a new version of Vegas

Has anybody heard if their is going to be a new copy of Vegas, which is a full Sony product, not just Sonic Foundry rebadged? I hope it will have extra features - like better effects with faster rendering times and the use of using graphics cards for rendering.

Vegas 5.0 just came out not too long ago. You might have to wait al little while before another version comes out.

Re: Is their going to be a new version of Vegas

Vegas 5 is a Sony product, not just "Sonic Foundry rebadged."

However, it's pushing a year on the release of Vegas 5, so there may be a 6 in the works for this year. NAB is coming up -- there may be an announcement then.

Re: Is their going to be a new version of Vegas

Close. It was released around NAB time -- I think Jarred got the first copy as a door prize there. It was, as I recall, announced in March.

Vegas 5.0 was officially announced and released in April at NAB.

don't you think there'd be a 5.5 revision before a full blown 6.x?

Perhaps some minor workflow enhancements, including nested timelines, maybe a new filter or two and a couple of bug fixes (not that there are many to be made).

I'd expect they'd have to come up with a significant improvement to justify a full 6.x release this soon after the 5.0 revamp. I just don't know exactly what that improvement would be, other then to quench David's lust for background rendering.

Re: Is their going to be a new version of Vegas

There was no 4.5 and there wasn't much more than a year between 4 and 5.

Not that I really expect a 6 as early as NAB.

Nested timelines strikes me as a must-have for the next version. While I’d dearly love background rendering, I don’t expect that one soon.

I *am* curious, though, as to why more programs don’t take advantage of the video card for effects rendering.

Re: Is their going to be a new version of Vegas

I was always told that video cards don't actually impact very much upon rendering until 3d transformations comes into play...so it would require a lot more support to enable video card accellerated rendering that would be used maybe 10% of the time. I don't know a thing about videocards though, so that could be completely wrong.

Here's a thought: maybe the next upgrade won't be to vegas.

I'd expect there will be far more need to upgrade the DVD authoring software with all the new standards coming out...so perhaps we'll see an upgrade in that before vegas.

Pinnacle Edition takes advantage of the GPU for both 2D and 3D effects.  If it can, then any program can.  It's one thing that I really, really like about Edition.

It sounds like your coming from an adobe background. Personally, I can't stand that they release they're bug fixes as a paid upgraid. That is just really poor customer service. I have yet to find a bug in vegas that affects my workflow, when I was working with premiere pro, I found 3 that seriously affected my workflow in the first week (and I'm not even talking about the 24p workflow). I find it refreshing that sony releases updates as .a, .b etc. fixing problems as they come, and not charging you for something you already paid for.

Re: Is their going to be a new version of Vegas

I'm coming from a software background, the multiple "bug fix revisions" are not a behavior exclusive to adobe unfortunatly. What I was intending to say is that I don't see an available "leap" to justify a full revision to get towards a 6.x version. If anything is to be released, I'd expect it to be a 5.5 with minor upgrades. Video editing is so touchy and expensive, you really need to present a solid case to the end users in order to get them to upgrade.

I have not touched Premiere since the first week I started this job and discovered that vegas was installed on the same machine. Before that I was working exclusively in Apple hardware based apps. While the workflow and interface couldn't be farther from FCP, the stability of Vegas on a well maintained PC is about as close as you can get to a Mac.

Re: Is their going to be a new version of Vegas

There are number of directions Vegas could go to “justify” a version 6.

We’ve touched on a few – background rendering, nested timelines, GPU effects rendering . . .

There are advanced networking capabilities which could be added. Genuine EDL export. Improved keyframing. I wouldn’t mind an option for a genuine source window, though I probably wouldn’t use it much – people coming from other apps might not as alienated then. Improved timecode/clip/reel display. Improved media management. More precise control over effects, especially color correction.

To name but a few.

Vegas doesn’t do “x.5s,” though. Which is nice, because b, c, d, e, etc., updates are free, as Scharky points out.

Re: Is their going to be a new version of Vegas

I didn't mean a bug fix revision. A lot of software companies will do a .5 revision that genuinely adds new features but doesn't change the architecture of the underlying software...but yeah, that depends on the company's policy.

The things you mention in addition would make a nice "full revision" upgrade for the end user. Some of them were things I didn't immediately think of.

My biggest need is for nested timelines, but those others would be beneficial as well.

Re: Is their going to be a new version of Vegas

Not all updates are bug revisions. Some add new features, like 4.0b did with 24p support.

Re: Is their going to be a new version of Vegas

Looks like a started a good thread. This may be a stupid question, but what is nested timelines. Also yeah an easier to use network rendering would be good - I can never get it too work, as it is too complicated. A guide will be good.

Also in DVD architect 2.0 when you create a submenu (just text) you cannot put the text in an angle as it has to be horizontal. I find this really annoying, can this be done in Architect? An example will be a button - PLAY. You can only have it horizontal and not at a 45 degree angle etc.

Re: Is their going to be a new version of Vegas

On the Sony Vegas forum, I think they're pretty much in agreement that it was Sonic's modus operandi to pretty much announce a major revision at each NAB...

There was much complaining when 5.0 was first released, that people didn't think there were enough changes in it to justify an upgrade fee. I initially hesitated too, for the same reason, but after getting 5.0 I can't imagine living without the bezier masking and network rendering! So if there's to be a 6.0 this soon, I will likely whine about the lack of upgrades until the "special upgrade price" is about to expire, like I did last time, then I'll bite the bullet and order it, like I did last time, and it'll turn out to be one of the best decisions I make as far as software. Like it did last time.

As far as what I *need* for it to have: background rendering, full-fledged fully-integrated HDV support, and full-fledged firewire DVCPRO-HD support. If that's all they add, I'd be a happy camper and would pay the $200 upgrade price.

Everyone should go to the Sony Vegas website and request those features, so we have a better chance of getting them.
