Is the URSA Mini 4.6K worth $2,000 more for .6k?

The Blackmagic Design URSA Mini 4K Digital Cinema Camera (EF-Mount) is $2,995. For $2,000 more you can get the Blackmagic Design URSA Mini 4.6K Digital Cinema Camera (EF-Mount) for $4,995. That's $2,000 more for an extra .6k.

In the grand scheme of things, an extra .6k is pretty worthless. You have no vimeo or youtube options for 4.6k. All it does is add one extra layer of needing to convert footage eventually down to 4k or 1920. My guess is most will still just shoot at 4k with it. What are the benefits of this extra .6k? I know it's got a better sensor, but $2k more for an extra .6k doesn't seem like a reasonable price difference.

Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera 2.5k (EF Mount) is $1,995. For $1,000 more you can get a Blackmagic Design Production Camera 4K (EF Mount) for $2,995. That price difference makes sense.

Honestly even at $1,000 more for an extra .6k, I don't think most consumers will see the benefit. Blackmagic might have hurt them self with that pricing structure and probably should have went for 6k at that price difference, it would have made more sense.

Can someone please justify to me why an extra .6k is truly worth spending an extra $2k on the camera? I would like to know the rationale on that.

Im definitely not a BMD expert as their business strategy is not my cup of tea. Though, I do believe the 4.6K mini has a different (new) sensor than the other. So I imagine there are quality benefits beyond the .6K resolution.

I'm sure someone can come in here and expand on that.

It's not the same sensor. It's not the same image.

The whole camera body as a tool is the same.
But it is effectively two different camera models in the same housing.

The URSA 4K with the "Version 2" 4k sensor is a degree better, yet similar looking, to the BMPC 4k Production Camera. But the URSA Mini 4.6K is an entirely higher-level sensor. The image is radically superior. Providing, among other things, in the neighborhood of 2 to 3 stops more dynamic range.

So YEAH... it's worth it.

Too expensive for me...but one day..

Wrong question......it should be is .6k worth $2k more for 3 stops more dynamic range ( huge ) and a new sensor...... if it ever arrives?

It's already finished.
The first round of pre-order fulfillment of the URSA Mini 4.6K is already underway.
But BMD isn't going to list it as "Available for purchase" or "Shipping" until a good amount of the pre-orders have been fulfilled first. And there are A LOT of pre-orders already in.

Worst camera delivery ever. Yes it looks fantastic in all the "pre-release" videos lately but I have a hard time supporting BMD with the way they do business. I feel they need to do better and NAB is coming and it will hard for me to buy into what they are showing.

UNLESS, they will shock everyone again with something special (or with special pricing) :)

Where did you hear this? I've not seen any news that this is the case, then again no reason that I should have.
The 4.6 sensor apparently has improved dynamic range, also has no problem with the "black hole sun". It doesn't have global shutter at all speeds though, one area where it loses vs the 4k sensor. The 4k is global shutter all the way, while the 4.6k is rolling from 30-60fps on the Mini and from 60-120fps on the big Ursa. If I were buying I would definitely say the 4.6k is worth the extra.

You shouldn't compare prices to pixels.

With this logic you could ask 'is an Alexa worth $70.000 more for 2.6k LESS pixels!'

Of course there is more to an image than resolution alone.
