Is the PS3 worth it?

I have a buddy who has a PS3, unopened. He realized he doesnt want it and he's willing to sell it to me for what he paid for it to avoid the hassle of posting it on ebay. This may be a moot point. For all I know, they might be available all over the place.

What I want to know if this system is worth it? I used to be a gamer, 10 plus years ago, but since there, I really haven't had much time to get addicted to a game. But, I think I'd like to have a game console here for some downtime, for friends when they come over etc.

So, I ask all you gamers out there, is the PS3 as good as the hype? Would I be better off with an Xbox or Xbox 360? I am not a huge fan of 1st person shooter games...I am more into role playing games...

Yes, specifically at retail price as well. You friend is doing you a great favor.

A few questions though for you.

Do you have an HDTV? If so then its even better. Blu-Ray movies are wonderful, and everyone will want to watch movies on it once they see em. Every friday is movie night at my place and we watch a Blu-Ray movie or an HD-DVD movie to enjoy the night.

Do you have some patience? The better PS3 games will be out later next year, and Square Enix, the makers of final fantasy and the better RPG games are only coming out on the PS3. Some will be on the Wii as well. None on the 360

Playing back your own media files. The PS3 doesnt use WMV to playback movies, it uses Mpeg 4 , which is GREAT! You can easily just put your movies from your computer, DVX or preferably HVX, onto an SD card, or Memory Stick, or CF card, or even a USB Flash drive/USB Hard Drive and then play them back instantly from the PS3 XMB (PS3 dashboard). They playback at whatever encoding you exported them at meaning if you made some HD stuff on an HVX you can export that to Blu-Ray quality MP4's and watch them from the PS3 to your HDTV. Its my number 1 favorite feature so far with the PS3.

Online gaming is free. Downloading demos is free as well. And the downloadable games are much cheaper than the 360's Arcade. Lemmings 2 for example is 3 bucks. Blast Factor is 10 bucks. They are great for casual gaming and just hanging out.

You can download PS1 games for 6 bucks each to play on your PSP, or later on on the PS3 for classic PS gaming.

Linux is an installable operating system on it, and its legit and supported by Sony. There is an option in the menu to format the HDD (like boot camp on the Mac) to install Linux on it. Simple and easy process.

The games out right now arent that great, but thankfully the PS3 is the premier media center in my mind for a gaming machine. Its what ive been waiting for personally, being able to play my HD MP4 files on it.

any other questions just ask.

hey. thanks for the ton of info. what do you work for sony? ha! thanks for the info, i appreciate it. I am on the fence. its hard to justify such a large purchase this time of the year. but i am very much considering it.

there aren't many games out right now and the ones they do have for the ps3 are pretty much what you've experienced with a ps2, but with better graphics.

if you're into role playing games, you might want to look at games you can play on your computer. there are a lot of online games that might interest you.

if you're looking for something that friends can come over and play, then you should check out a wii. wii sports is a blast with a group. easy to learn and fun to swing around the controller. for single player you'd probably like legend of zelda.

but like the earlier poster pointed out, ps3 does more than plays games. if you want to see movies in hi-def, that's a definite selling point.

Yes, none of my friends come over to play the PS3, Ive only got 1 controller. LOL.

All my friends have a Wii also, and we have the occasional scheduled get together, but mainly its a random 9 holes on Wii Sports golf, followed by 2 hours of Wii Sports.

But the PS3 is definatly worth it no matter how you plan on gaming. Resistance is great fun, and Co-op can only be better. Like i said only one controller, but one of my friends was having a great time playing what i played in it so far and i had fun watching him. :P whatever that means. im sick like that. i know.

PC role playing games might get your RTS and MMORPG gaming satisfied, but for classics like FF and Dragon Quest along with the random Atlus titles like Disgaea and others. Also, the PS3 is Backwards compatible out of the box unlike the 360, which claims backwards compatibility, but there really isnt much on the old XBOX that you havnt missed unless you are a hardcore looker. KOTOR, and a few others are worthy, but they play pretty bad. The PS3 has the PS2 components in it, so in the meantime you can play Final Fantasy 12 (XII) which is amazing! the Metal Gears, all the other Square Enix games as well.

IMO, i think its worth it especially considering the backwards compatibility, its been making me get into some older PS2 games i never finished up. My PS2 hasnt been played in a while, its been connected to the smaller HDTV i have, 26" but only been playing Guitar Heros on it.

Even goodies like Final Fantasy Tactics can be a great time to play. If you are looking for RPGs, then the Sony Systems are the ones you want. Hell, even the PSP has some AMAZING RPGs on it. Ive got a few, but i never play them, just not enough time. LOL. I am a collector of sorts, dont work for sony, but been playing games since i was 2. 23 now and still have all of my old stuff dating back to NES, got a boxed and mint condition NES Track Pad with the Track and Field, and a few other really rare things that arent rebought, they are all from my child hood.

Anyways ill stop rambling about that. I hope to encourage you to pick one up. But everyone whether they are gamers or not needs to have a Wii for sure. Theres no on the fence about that , trust me. ABSOLUTLY must own a Wii, then you decide about the next system, and you definatly should have a PS3, well i recommend it rather :)

Xbox360. Hands down. I've been a Sony person since the first PS1. I took the chance like 2 months back and felt like i converted religions when going to xbox360. It was the best decision i ever made. Games are unbelivable. The system has been out longer and by this point there's no bugs in the systems (ehhemm...PS3!). I've heard nothing but crap about ps3. They shipped 400k units to hype themselves up, they got for $1200. It's bullshit, i think sony made a huge marketing mistake. Xbox360 definately has the longevity as a gaming console. As far as graphics, ps3 is a touch better than 360, but honestly buddy. Play GEARS OF WAR, you'll see what the 360 is capable. Unbelivable!

What the 360 is capable of and what developers are doing with it are 2 very different things.

And i think you have it backwards inspire84, there have not been any wide spread incidents with the PS3 and hardware problems. None, meanwhile, the 360 continues to have overheating and random "ring o' death" reports, along wtih MS charging 140 bucks for replacement now, as well as ground shipping being the only choice.

As an owner of every system, past, present and future, i can , in my educated and non fanboy'd opinion, say that the PS3 is what this person is looking for. Just because you prefer Gears of War and many other very Xbox'esque title, doesnt mean that this user will, one can only recommend based on his wants, which he doesnt really want to begin with, just looking for a recommendation as to why it would be a good decision. There is never a bad decision for a choice of system, frankly all 3 are must haves to experience some specific games, however the PS3 will give him more than his fair share of RPG gaming, more than anyone could complete in a life time...seriously. Including the back catalog of PS2 and PS1 games, theres no other choice for someone looking for that type of gaming.

The PS3 is also a great choice seeing as hes on the DVX boards, im sure hes got a ton of his own content that he created with his camera that will be readily playable in a superior format on his PS3 to his TV. Where as the Xbox 360 will only play WMV files from a PC with WMP11 and has a very unfriendly and slow interface. It seemed slick when it came out but is now an Advertisement Haven which is being mistaken as content by fanboy gamers all over the internet unfortunatly.

Combined with free online capabilities that arent forced down your throat, its a suprisingly friendly gaming experience that packs a TON of power behind its shiny black physique that doesnt feel like its preaching about anything to any sort of choir.

A supberb choice for the gamer who wants variety as well as multimedia capabilites.

Not a big gamer, but we are getting a Wii for the play with others and movement factor.

See....now you guys got me thinking....I am now more sold on the Wii. It seems to be more of what I am looking for. I love a good game now and again but I never have time to get addicted to something (though, as I said, a good role playing game has a knack of sucking me in)...but, I love the idea of getting a game console that can occupy people.

When friends come over, I love the idea of having the option of having a game console that can get us all involed in a round of golf or baseball...etc.

Now, I gotta look around for one of them....thanks!

i personally move too much in my everyday life and could use some sit down and chill time, i'm getting a ps3 when the price settles down.

For a fraction of the cost, you could pick up somebody's PS2 and all their old games. Games is games, cheap games is best ;)

I actually thought about that. You could probably pick up an older XBOX system with a slew of games for less than $200 bucks off of EBAY. I'd do that, but the interactive nature of the Wii system is beginning to appeal to me...
