Is the Canon XL2 any good?

Is the Canon XL2 any good?

A friend of mine is selling his, and I’m interested ... but I know nothing about cameras and camera quality.

Yes. Pretty old, eventually people will almost all have moved to HD and not want SD tapes anymore, but it's good. Check prices on Ebay or the like to get an idea of fair value.

for the money, and your first cam ind buy an hv20-40, its only a consumer cam, but quality wise it smashes the xl2. plus its progressive (PAL)

I had an XL2, sold it. I have an XL-1s still, which I tried to sell, but nobody would pay me what I want, so I didn't bother selling it at all. Now I sometimes loan it out to people but that's about it.

I would never buy an HV20 over an XL2 (btw the XL2 does shoot progressive). It's a fine camera for it's time but now the XH-A1 does what the XL2 does and it does it in HD. If you just need SD then it's a fine choice.

Thanks. :)

I think I'm going to wait until I know more about cameras in general.

Exactly! Totally wise move.

Walk on a set sometime. A camera doesn't sit there by itself. Yet all the time folks shell out every dime they have just getting a camera and then have next to nothing left to put out for all of the production gear actually needed to support a shoot.

Then they show up around here and announce they have a couple hundred bucks left in their budget and expect the community knows of some secret list of top pro gear which fits that budget.

This is one of the most expensive fields someone can work in. Every time a corner is cut it exacts its toll on the end product. Although an experienced professional can make lesser tools perform to their maximum, its unlikely that someone without the experience and skillset would even be aware what needs to be taken into consideration.

Put in the time yourself and learn. Then put in someone else's money!
