Is Social Network an Oxymoron?

I think a lot of what this article describes, especially the bit from Allan Bloom, is very much applicable to the rat-race environment of filmmaking, at least from what I've seen.

At the moment, I consider my freelance career to be stalled for now as I'm locked up in a 9-5 career, but on the occasions that I do go to filmmaker meetups to mingle and rub shoulders with as many people as I reasonably can, a good portion of them (myself included) are completely honest in our motivation for going: connections.

Now this seems obvious, because making connections is so critical to this industry, but sometimes you do just want to put aside the business talk for a few moments and enjoy people for who they are, talk about the things you aspire to do - without shame - rather than create ridiculously elaborate, or outright false claims to what you supposedly have done. I've been duped before by people claiming to be "writers" or "filmmakers", only to find myself working under someone who has no idea what they're doing on set. Don't get me wrong, I love networking, and I love social networks, but they do add to the cynicism that is film networking.

An interesting read for sure. I really need to get back to DVXUser!
