Is "Open Water" shot w/DVX?

Re: Is "Open Water" shot w/DVX?

Was "Open Water" shot at 4:3 and then cropped on the blowup for 1.85:1? Or did they use an anamorphic adapter?

Also does anyone know who did their video to film transfer?

Re: Is "Open Water" shot w/DVX?

I'm an indy video movie-maker......but, I pray that average movie goers (non camera tech types) don't become so "dumbed down" by indy video movies that they no longer see the quality difference between film & video.

I saw Open Water, and honestly heard quite a few comments in the theater from average joes which let me know clearly people can see the difference. I won't repeat some of the comments (especially from those who didn't know it was an indy going in). The movie-makers display skill in building tension and the acting was very good, but I know they must be dissappointed with the overall look, because it is quite rough. And, yes, much interlacing lines, blocky edges etc. (note the sun in some scenes)

I wish I could afford to work with film, but I can't.
So it appears we can plot to lines on a graph....

1. the time it takes for the masses to slowly but surely become acclimated to inferior video look as 'normal' or 'top of the line'

2. the time it takes for video technology to completely equal film quality in every way.

Which line is steeper? I'm hoping #2 wins.

Re: Is "Open Water" shot w/DVX?

I dont think we can blame the filmmakers on this. They shots on PD150's and entered it into Sundance. They knew they werent shooting on 35mm or SUper 16. Its not their fault LIONS GATE swooped in and did the filmout.

Honestly, who cares what it looks like? LIONS GATE liked it enough to buy it and the film has grossed $25,156,735 (according to BOX OFFICE MOJO). The point is, they made a film on DV good enough to get bought and launch thier careers. Props to them and proprs to the inde dv filmmaker.

I am my own BOSS and spend all day on a computer (Processing Information) so I have ample time to surf while I process orders and criminal requests.

Here, Here! They deserve credit. Their success paves the way for other budding filmakers. I'd rather see a good story like Open Water made using DV then a 100 million dollar budget film that makes me want to walk out(T3 for example).

Re: Is "Open Water" shot w/DVX?

Although I actually liked T3 (No, not as much as the orginal and T2) Im picking up what you're putting down.

Too many films are made and money squandered on CRAP CRAP and more CRAP. A film like OPEN WATER only serves to bene' us DV filmmakers.

Re: Is "Open Water" shot w/DVX?

The images were very sharp in medium and close-up shots but as with all mini-dv, the wide shots were less than desirable?
Is it been discussed earlier? I am very curious because I searched the site to some thread on this and couldnt find one.I also noticed the wide shots in dark work beter than a fully lit bright shots.

Re: Is "Open Water" shot w/DVX?

Open Water is PD150's as far as I know, and collateral was HD and I think 16, but I'm not sure about the 16mm part.

Re: Is "Open Water" shot w/DVX?

While I was sitting in the theater with 2 of my friends, watching the "Open Water" preview, I could tell right away, it was video, and I whispered to my friend, "That was shot on video." He gave me a "what the hell are you talking about?" kind of look.
