Is Moving to FCPX (or other) Nessesary?

I got FCP7 not long ago and it seems to be working okay with editing 5D footage. Is upgrading to FCPX or another editing software going to be nessesary in the near future? Or is staying with FCP7 going to be fine?

What are peoples main reasons for moving to FCPX or Avid/Premiere as opposed to sicking with FCP7?

Depends what you mean by necessary. Necessary to be on the 'latest thing' I suppose so. Necessary to edit footage- not at all. Anything you can do in FCP X you can do in 7. Also tons of stuff X can't. Many sagely folks are taking a wait and see attitude at this point.

If FCP7/FCS3 is working for you and your workflow now, moving to "X" doesn't seem necessary at all.

All the talk about "switching" is largely dependent on whether or not you need the features that FCP X no longer offers (multicam support, OMF/EDL/XML, etc.). And even then, there's no real reason to "switch" from FCP7 to Avid or Premiere, as long as the tool does what you need it to do now. I see this more as a great time to broaden one's knowledge of all the editing platforms out there, and become less dependent on any one piece of software, regardless of who makes it.

It is a brand new app. And if history tells us anything it's avoid 1.0s like the plague, especially on production critical software. Let it simmer for a while and check back unless you're dying to live on the bleeding edge.

If I were you stay with FCP7, It may lack some features , even though FCP is end of line it will do everything and more for a very long time, just because FCPX is out there now it lack features ,I would wait till FCPX has been improved. If you see what Adobe has said about PP6 they are not giong to change anything but work on bug fixes and maybe some small add on's. My feeling Apple should have just done the same , and made IMovieX just my 2cents.
