Is majoring in Film in college necessary?!?!?!

Policar - i am very sorry if i came off as high and mighty- that is not at all what i intended to do. I was hoping to be a bit inspiring,

The thing is, if you really have no time to do what you need to do, then advice will not help. What I am trying to say is that you, or anyone else, should and CAN find a way to succeed in what they want to do. You can find a way.

Thats all that I am saying. You are right - our situations are very different - and so is everyone elses - But the only person who can find a way to make your situation work is you.

So again I am sorry - I have no idea what you go through on a day to day basis and I am not saying I do.

humble apologies

The original post definitely inspired me. I am going to make something happen!

Is filmschool helpful? Not so much. Are connections to people in the industry and job opprotunities created by teachers helpful. Absolutely.

If you think you can just walk into LA, New York or BC and find a job working on feature films, by all means go now. For the rest of us, we need a safe environment to prove ourselves to people who are already working in the industry, and are eager to give new talent a chance to work at the top.

If you go to a filmschool with no teachers actually working in the industry, there is no reason to go. The professor who only shows up for only 1 in 3 classes, because he got swamped with production demands, will teach you far more than the teacher who shows up early every day and demands your homework to be turned in before x:xx time or its late. The real perk is when your teachers invite you to work *with* them, not for them.

This is how the industry works. It's a credit system. You earn credit by your work, you spend credit on recommendations. If your recommendations are accurate, you get their credit too. It's an over simplification, but really, the whole thing is one giant pyramid scheme.
