Is Logic good?  and double sound question

I'm looking for an external editor for doing films. Peak sucks major ass (that is just my opinion). I've been hearing more guys using Logic. Anyone use it for an external audio editor with FCP? If so, how do you like it?

Next question:
I've never edited my audio externaly and then brung it back into the NLE. How in the heck do they edit audio with out seeing the video clips in the time line with that. Like a double sound scene or somthing. Do you edit the film first, then go back and sweeten the sound later? Maybe I'm just making it harder then it really is. Do

Well, some audio you edit outside the NLE, then line it up with picture in the NLE. However, ProTools (and maybe Logic... anyone know?) will let you view video and sync audio to it.

In order to lock to 23.98 video in ProTools (LE) you have to have the DV Toolkit option add-on to enable the timecode functions... just a sidenote.

(another sidenote, go with protools) ;)

All my sound engineering friends think Logic is the future now that they're owned by Apple. Expect user friendliness and Mac platform integration and stability to continuously improve as Apple helps Emagic along an agressive development path.

Of course, ProTools is the industry standard, but the price tag certainly reflects it.

My band recorded a project using MOTU's Digital Performer, which is also extremely good but might not have the legs that Logic does with regard to future features and Mac-specific tweaking.

That is the word on the street, anyway. Take it for what it's worth.

LOGIC ROCKS but I've been using Peak for the last six months since I don't feel like bringing out a cannon just for target practice. Peak and soundsoap solve most of my needs for now. I come from the recording biz so my knowledge is different than yours. I have all the audio programs. Some stuff I do in Pro Tools, some in Logic, some in Cubase, some in Reason, some in Deck, most in Peak, but I concurr Logic is the future for us Macinsteins and will serve you well. Just layoff the critiques of programs you don't understand, Peak is very good for what it's for.

ProTools just freaking rocks. The program works extremely well with FCP and not ever being exposed to Logic I really cannot compare the two pieces of software. My sound guy uses Protools for everything - it is the industry standard. The price definately reflects how verstile and awesome the program is. You most definately get what you pay for with protools. If you end up getting Logic please let us know how it works out for you. I am somewhat interested in the program.

Correct me if I am wrong but in the new version of Logic I believe you can actually have video play while you work with the sound. I may be wrong but check out the logic website it looks like there is video in the pics....hmm... :)

You speak of how great ProTools is, (it is), but fail to realize that PT can do this too (import a movie and work with it(

No I understand you can do that in protools you can too. Thats why we use it LOL. I am just saying I think you can do that in Logic too, after this post is about LOgic.

Re: Is Logic good?  and double sound question

O.K., My two cents. (Remember, this is coming from a guy who a few DVX's were saying that my trailer's sound blew chunks. It's in mono on the web for one thing. Honestly, the film sounds fine for the most part. It wasn't a post problem at least.)

Anyway, I have a full blown Pro Tools rig in my studio along with the "Control 24" console. I also have an LE System in the house where I edit using the Digi 002 Rack. I use the 002 Rack for film stuff currently. I could bust out the audio on a C.D. and bring it into my studio. I may do that on something, because I could do surround that way and have all the faders, gads of plug-ins, etc. Overkill most of the time, though. So, generally, the 002 Rack it is!

Anyway, in FCP, you simply "Export Audio to OMF" in the "Export window". There is an article on Ken Stone's site: (http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/omf_export_protools.html)

As for Logic, I own a copy and ended up pulling it off of my computer. I just could not get with it. I have heard it has a higher learning curve, which doesn't scare me, but add to the fact that I have been a Pro Tools guy for years and you can see why I am biased.

Speaking of Biased, Bias Peak is a good program, but I'm not nuts about it. I use it only for the Sound Soap plugin, although that can be used as a stand alone app. But, I have a copy of Peak, so what the hum!

I have thought about installing Logic on my G4 Powerbook for on the road as it doesn't require the hardware that Pro Tools does. That is one downside of PT. You have to have some kind of Digi hardware hooked up. At least with all the newer versions. (I know there was a Pro Tools free sometime ago that functioned on it's own). If you are going to bring anything into a sound app that isn't captured on DV in the first place, you may as well have some kind of hardware anyway. If you go Logic, there are all kinds of ways. If you go PT, you basically wind up with some kind of Digi hardware.

Logic is cheaper, Period! PT is always going to be a bit more money. Remember, it is also the indusry standard in recording. If you are an Avid user, PT is the way without a doubt as Avid is the standard. (But, ain't that changin' really frickin' quick?!) However, I think Logic is slower at becoming the standard in recording circles. I have heard about artist's using Logic for several records and I'm sure it's true, but many times they are using the midi capabilities soley. Logic's midi sequencing is arguably unsurpassed. PT has always fallen behind on this one, but the midi functions on PT is quite enough for most people unless you are Trent Reznor. Ginger Fish from Manason uses Logic for sequencing, but it is always dumped into PT for mixing. Ginger does most of the sequencing for the band although he is the drummer. (Drummers not getting their due again!)

In closing, there are several good choices and it's more about what you get used to. These comments are just my experience and two cents. Take it for what it's worth. Who knows, I may end up a Logic guy at some point!

FWIW, outside the U.S., Logic apparently outsells ProTools by several times. Given that and Apples development pace versus Avid's, and that may change over time. I have no bias either way (sorry, no pun intended).

DOH My bad... that's what I get for reading these things too quick!

Re: Is Logic good?  and double sound question

I just got Logic 6.4, and yes, you can view video while editing audio,
but, there are some syncing issues, and the manual is not very clear (for me anyway) on how to correct (offset) the problem

anyone done this?

Re: Is Logic good?  and double sound question

I've never used Logic. I do regularly use Digital Performer 4, both for video soundtrack and regular audio mixing/editing. I've also used ProTools, and frankly feel that it is overrated.

With DP4 you can generate a low-res QT movie to go along with the soundtrack. DP4 will show you the movie as you are editing, which is handy.

From what I read, Logic has a higher learning curve than the other apps, but since I've never tried it, that is only hearsay. If it is more like FCP, that might be an advantage. I have to do a kind of grand-mental-shift to move from FCP to DP4.
