is lens lens diameter and filter diameter the same thing?

not at all, some cameras have lots of plastic around the lens, so you could avec a 30mm diameter lens and a 58 diameter filter thread.
this can be due to the fact that lens has a wide angle position that require a much bigger filter size
onother reason is manufacturer have standard filter diameters for their accessories so they need to stick the some values.
for example sony use 37, 52, 58, 72, 77 so they will round up lens diameter to the next available size.
 
so how do i find the lens diameter in my camera if i needed to, say, get a 35mm adapter? in the manual, it says that my hdr-sr10 has a FILTER diameter of 30mm, but it has no say on the LENS diameter
