Is it worth?

I had custom built a mac. roughly a whopping $12,000

Dual 2.7GHz PowerPC G5
• 8GB DDR400 SDRAM (PC3200) - 8x1GB (8g)
• 2x400GB Serial ATA - 7200rpm (800gb)
• NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT DDL w/256MB GDDR3 SDRAM
• Apple Cinema HD Display (30" flat panel)
• Apple Cinema HD Display (30" flat panel)
• Bluetooth Module
• 16x SuperDrive double-layer (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
• Bluetooth Module + Apple Wireless Keyboard & Mouse - U.S. English
• Mac OS X - U.S. English

is it really worth paying that much money for a highend computer like that for editing video?

take off the second 30" display, thats over kill. Use a monitor u already have as a second or buy a flat panel from dell or someone. In fact, Just for a sec, rethink the first 30", 30 inches is huge if u havnt already seen it. 23" is quite large. but get it if u want.

also knock down the ram from 8 gigs to 2. for now, more than to doesnt seem to make a difference. If later, program take advatage of it u can always add it.

Bluetooth and wireless keyboard are again overkill, u really dont need them.

If ur filthy rich, spend the $12000, but if you're trying to save dough, thoughs r the simplest ways to cut cost without a loss in performance :)

And really think through if you need that much hard drive space, because those 400gb drives are really expensive. AT school we had 23" cinema displays and they were really anonoying. I'd rather having something that was 20".... Think about how long it takes to move the mouse accross the entire screen. Pain in the ass.

yea. true. good points. but I didnt think that they would be room to upgrade ram. after that 2 so when you order 8 thought they would do something to make you have that much. good points though. thanks

$5,498.00

well not $12,000 anymore more like $5,000 I have the money for it. but i just want to see if its worth paying that much. I was never planning on buying a $12,000 system to begin with. thats just too much money.

Good decision, $12,000 is too high.
Even at $5,000, it's still steep.

Do a 100 system drive and a 200+- capture drive. Never capture, or work from the system drive.

Yes, its important to get two seperate drives. If I was looking to buy a mac right now I'd probably get something very similar to your $5,498 estimate if I had that kinda $.

Great rig. But I'd lose the second display as well. You don't need it with a single display that big. Your SYSTEM drive probably doesn't need to be 400GB. I'm getting away with 80gb although I'll admit 120 or more would be better. However having a second internal at 400 ain't bad at all. Plenty of space for video files. You have to have a seperate drive for your video files.

I use LaCie D2 Triple Extreme FW drives in addition to my internal (250) and they work great and are relatively inexpensive.

That $5,498 price sounds verrrry good. I just bought a similar system for a little less -- but it doesn't have as big a hard drive, the graphics card isn't as good, and it didn't come with no 23" monitor (I still have to get one; am thinking Dell, thanks to the person on this thread who mentioned it -- sorry, I forget who). Anyway, if they're throwing in the monitor for that price, that sounds prettttty good!

yea. so what should I do then about the hd? just leave as 400gb? and buy a g-raid drive?

oh also I may not have to worry about buying a g5 for now. since my friends friends work just got all new g5s and dont want theyre g4s anymore so Im gonna snag on of the g4s of theyre hands.

oh and also I just found out where to do the student discount. My 5,480 computer just dropped to $4,718.00 quite a savings

Don't buy your ram from Apple, they are notoriously high priced. You can cut the price of ram in half or there abouts, by purchasing from another source.

Yep, I would recommend the LaCies as well. I just picked up a 250 FW800 for $200 at Dell. I think that a 400GB system drive is a little overkill but that's just me. Definitely get ram from anywhere else except Apple unless you just have extra $$ that you don't care about.
